Quick Reviews: Noreve Leather Sleeve for MacBook, Edge Tech Corp DiskGO 1" Mini 4GB Hard Drive

Noreve Leather Sleeve for MacBook

Pros: Beautiful, Luxurious Leather; Quality Craftsmanship
Cons: No Extra Pockets; Possible Durability Questions; Pricey
In Sum: If You Love Leather, This is Your MacBook Sleeve.
Pricing: $76.21, Noreve.com More Info: Product Page

Noreve is a French company headquartered in Saint-Tropez. Their website is decorated with pictures of pretty men and women using computers and cell phones in stylish homes and offices and, of course, frolicking on the beach. As their website explains, "The unique design and style of the south of France can be appreciated in [our] entire selection of products." So it's not too suprising that Noreve's first offering for owners of the new 13" MacBook is a leather notebook sleeve that sells for almost $80.

The sleeve they sent for review is made from smooth black leather with a single pocket sized to hold a MacBook and lined with 5mm of foam padding backed by a soft fabric lining. If you love leather - leather seats and couches, jackets and gloves - you'll want this sleeve. There's no denying the luxurious feel and top-notch craftsmanship of this sleeve, which is also available in a color called "Sandy Vintage." I question the long-term durability of a smooth leather notebook sleeve, but then again many a beloved leather jacket are still being worn decades after they were bought. Noreve did also say that their pebble grain leather sleeves, available in Camel and Pink, are a bit more rugged.

Edge Tech Corp DiskGO 1" Mini 4GB Hard Drive

Pros: Tiny; Storage Up to 8GB; USB 2.0; Reasonably Priced
Cons: None. 8GB for $150 is Best Value
In Sum: Cheap, Tiny, Fast Storage
Pricing: $99.95, Edgetechcorp.com More Info: Product Page

Edge Tech Corp's line of wee little DiskGO portable hard drives are neato. They sent me the 4GB version and the only thing better than that are the 6GB and 8GB versions that sell for marginally higher prices. DiskGO is a 1" drive in an aluminum enclosure with a USB 2.0 plug that flips out for use and swivels back into the enclosure for protection while you travel.

"As small as a box of matches" at just 1.9" (L) x .63" (W) x .1.9" (H) and weighing one-tenth of a pound, DiskGO is a newer, better version of that 512MB flash key around your neck. I tried the drive out to move documents between home, work, and as many friends' computers as I could find and it works as promised. Four gigs is a lot of space if you're moving word documents, spreadsheets, and even some photos and music files around, but if you need more room, a 6GB ($129.95) and 8GB ($149.95) versions are available. Actually, the 8 gig model is probably the way to go at only $150. My 4 gig DiskGO is currently serving a auxiliary storage for mp3 files and it's plenty fast to allow for network playback of music via iTunes sharing. DiskGO is good stuff.
