Why Jobs Always Wears that Signature Suit
Apple CEO Likened to Einstein in CBS Station's Feature Segment

by Joe Leo, Columnist

MAKING THE CALL: Steve Jobs referees the crowd after his keynote address at last year's Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Or, is it from this year's Macworld? Wait, maybe that's the one from 2002? (Look closely at the product in his hands, and you'll figure it out). [PHOTO: ©2007, J. Leo]

NEWS FEATURE: 1.22.08-- On this day back in 1984, the Macintosh was announced during Super Bowl XVIII making it the first-ever personal computing machine to include a device called a "mouse" that allowed you to control items on the screen. While the question over who invented the mouse, Apple or Xerox (or someone else entirely), ensues, a better question yet?

Why does Steve Jobs always wear the same outfit--blue jeans and a black mock turtleneck--at every big Apple product release/announcement, namely, Macworld?

AD: You won't find prices on any suits, but you'll definitely find the best prices on Mac gear like the new MacBook Air or the Time Capsule device over at Mac Prices. From the latest bundles and deals, to the latest and lowest prices. (With the money you save, you can go buy yourself a new Jobs-style suit!).

To quote Ken Bastida, anchor of the CBS5 Eyewitness News, the CBS owned-and-operated TV station in the San Francisco Bay Area, "You'd think a guy who once sold multi-colored computers would also add a little to his wardrobe, at least, once in awhile."

Each night, a feature segment entitled, "Good Question," poses (of course) a new question for viewers. Some are submitted by viewers while others thought up by anchor Bastida himself, or anyone else in the studio. Recent questions that evoke timeliness are "Where Does [the expression] 'The Whole 9 Yards' Come From?" or "Why Do We Still Have Pay Phones?"

The question last night was a post-Macworld one.

Bastida began the segment, "Macworld, the international confab of Apple Computer fans just ended here in San Francisco, but it left us with tonight's good question. Why does Apple CEO Steve Jobs always wear the same outfit? (Levi's, and that black t-shirt)."

With Apple's old TV commercial, their "Yum" ad--the one with the second generation iMacs with colors other than the original (and only one available) Bondi Blue--serving as a transition, we see Bastida dressed up exactly like Steve Jobs as he heads out to the Moscone Center with Macworld 2008 in full swing.

He interviews two people on the street and then counters their responses with his own. Bastida reports, "It's weird, but he's not the first inventor to display, the same fashion quirk. Albert Einstein reportedly had an entire closet full of identical black suits, so that he wouldn't have to waste his brain power deciding what to wear."

(Identical black suits not to be confused with "black suits identical to Steve Jobs's suits").

Bastida heads to the main offices of WIRED Magazine, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and interviews Products Editor, Mark McClusky, who he says has written about Apple in their magazine many times before.

McClusky says, "He's so conscious about brand presentation. You know, Apple's products are so minimalistic and beautiful. And I think it's an extension of that. It keeps the focus off of fashion, for him, and it keeps it on the message and on the message he's trying to send."

Shots of Steve Jobs making his keynote address from Macworlds 2002 through 2007 flash across the TV screen as anchor Bastida points out, in response to McClusky's comment, just how true this is as Jobs remains the same in each shot, save for the product in his hand(s).

"If you're trying to tell one year's Macworld from the next, you better focus on the products, because Steve Jobs's outfit won't tip you off," says Bastida.

Makes you wonder whether Jobs wears anything else out in public considering the same outfit, black mock turtleneck and blue jeans, is worn at every Apple press release he, officiates. (Wonder if he'd wear the same thing to the tip off at a Super Bowl if temperatures were freezing or below freezing like in, say, the Green Bay Packers' hometown).

But Steve Jobs is all about style... as can be seen in this report from Gizmodo when the Apple CEO touched down in Norway to meet his "buddy" Al Gore--who's on Apple's board of directors--receiving the Nobel Peace Prize late last year.
