Apple Products: Where's the Beef?

October 14, 1999

Lately, it seems that Apple hasn't been able to deliver on its promises. Lombard, iBook, G4, iMac DV - it's a great product lineup, but the problem is that there's no product. Steve Jobs must be taking this '0-day inventory' thing just a little too seriously. It's all fine and dandy to wow the public with the introduction of a great new product, but what's the point if you can't deliver within a reasonable timeframe after the announcement?

For the past year or so, this has been a real problem with Apple and its products. When I watched Jobs, on stage at MacWorld New York, state that the iBook would be shipping on September 1st, it was all I could do to stifle a loud chuckle. Yeah, right, Steve. You can only cry wolf so many times before you loose your credibility.

It took nearly two months for my PowerBook G3/400 to arrive after I placed my order. There are very few products that are worth that kind of hassel, and fortunately, Apple has those products. But Apple must be careful, because brand loyalty is easy-come, easy-go in the PC world, and the customer is always right. Any long-term successful salesman will tell you that. If Apple customers are consistently complaining about the lack of products in the channel (and they are), then your number one priority should be to remedy the situation.

Where's the beef, Apple?
