Preventing PowerBook Theft: Reader Replies

Thanks to everyone who responded to our article entitled "Preventing PowerBook Theft." Here are a few of the great responses:

From reader Glenn Perez:
"I read your article on Powerbook theft. I wanted to mention another way to protect your Powerbook or for that matter any Macintosh: Insurance. Last year I purchased an insurance policy from Safeware Insurance for my wife's new iMac and a Afga scanner for about $75.00 per year.

She is a teacher and her iMac was located in the classroom in which she teaches. About two months after purchasing the iMac someone did break in to the building in which her classroom was located. Taking not only the iMac but other computers, VCR's etc. The iMac was the only thing insured. Two weeks after filing a claim with Safeware we received a check. Enabling us to purchase a replacement iMac and scanner. Also after sending Safeware the new serial numbers on the new iMac and scanner they began being covered using the original Insurance policy for the remaining time left on the policy.

Two thing that are not covered under Safeware's computer insurance policies are theft from a vehicle and damage from earthquakes or other earth movement. The cost for a Laptop policy for an iBook or Powerbook and any other computer peripherals are listed below:

Total system value up to $1999, $20.00 per year premium
Total system value up from $2000 to $2499, $50.00 per year premium
Total system value up from $2500 to $2999, $80.00 per year premium

From reader Hank Hauffe:
"You might be interested in checking out the Spire cases at http://www.spireusa.com/products/notebook/notebook.htm. I've got the Zoom and, though it doesn't satiate my desire for a gob of pockets, it's been very satisfactory as a good strong, comfortable bag that doesn't advertise I have $2500 in it... and I guess it has as many pockets as most."
