The PR letter that came packaged with Tom Bihn's Smart Alec backpack touted it as something of a legend amongst backpack users in Seattle. Upon first glance, I didn't quite get it. Don't get me wrong -- the back is very cool looking in a stealth sort of way. Nice and sleek in black with a charcoal back panel, comfy wide straps, sturdy waterproof zippers, and the like. But I couldn't tell what made it so unique. Well, the look is unique, but "legendary"? Hmm... And now, a month or so of using it later, I get it. This past week I was laid up with an injury. I threw my back out on Monday morning -- a severe back spasm that, while another episode in a history of problems with my lower back, thankfully turned out not to be disc or nerve damage. PowerBooks and iBooks are more than powerful enough to serve as desktop computer replacements. When I sold my PowerMac G4 a little over two years back in favor of a PowerBook, I knew it would probably be the last time I'd own a desktop computer. While engineering advances like USB and Firewire connectivity, 802.11x and Bluetooth wireless networking, and bigger, brighter LCD and TFT displays have made it technologically feasible to make your one and only Mac a portable, the all-purpose PowerBook poses a new set of ergonomic concerns to its devotees. Working on a laptop computer all day can easily cause neck, shoulder, and lower back problems due to the simple fact that while a desktop machine's keyboard and display can be positioned independently of one another, prying your iBook's keyboard loose from its chasis is really not such a good idea. As such, a number of companies have gotten into the business of producing peripherals designed to make your desktop-laptop experience as ergonomically sound as possible. It's been over two years since AppleWorks 6 was introduced. Keynote came out about half that long ago, but it still doesn't have an 'i' in its name. About four months ago, Apple trademarked the name 'iWrite.' Does all this point to a new, Office-esque application or applications suite to be unveiled under the Apple brand at MacWorld next week? I don't know if I'd go quite that far, but I think there is a decent chance we'll see iWrite added to the Apple applications fold. A Mac-branded word processor bundled with every new Mac would make a lot of sense, especially if it could import and export cross-platform, .doc-compatible files. Read More...
