Will A Single-Core Power PC 970 Be The PowerBook G5 Chip?

At the end of Macworld week, a news story can the Taiwanese English language IT trade publication Digitimes announced in passing that not only G5 PowerBooks, but also G5 iBooks would be shipping from Apple's Taiwanese subcontractors in Q2, 2005. The authors noted that Asustek will start shipping iBook G5 notebooks to Apple in the second quarter of this year, and that Quanta Computer will ship PowerBook G5s at a rate of 30k-50k per month in Q2 2005. If this report is accurate, it represents a major development in the Apple portable world -- essentially the next revolution in PowerBook and iBook technology - - every bit as significant as the introduction of the first 68040 PowerBooks in 1994, the first Power PC 'Books in 1995, the original G3 PowerBook in 1997, and the G4 Titanium in 2001. To add G5 iBooks as well would make it doubly-revolutionary.

With all of the attention on Apple's new pint-sized offerings -- the Mac mini and iPod shuffle -- it's all too easy right now to bemoan a perceived shift in focus out of Cupertino from computers to consumer electronics. Make no mistake, Apple is a technology company right now and not "only" a computer maker -- they're riding the epic wave of the iPod and doing what they can to lead the masses into the brave new future of digital entertainment, starting with downloadable music. As an iBook/PowerBook user, especially, it's forgivable to feel a bit slighted by the overall feeling of iPodWorld 2005, I mean, MacWorld San Francisco. As excited as I was to see the Mac mini unveiled (a fully capable Mac for 500 bucks does more for me than a $100 screenless mp3 player, I must say), the real news out of San Francisco for longtime Apple users had less to do with what new boxes OS X will run on than what new applications OS X will run. A question I get asked very frequently is whether it is sensible to upgrade and older PowerBook, as opposed to applying the money that would have gone for upgrade components toward the purchase of a new ëBook. As always, the answer is: ¶it depends.¾ Itˆs also a moving target. My current provisional cutoff for sensible upgrade candidates is the Lombard (PowerBook G3 Series Bronze), and then only if itˆs a machine in better than average condition. The earlier WallStreet G3 Series is one of the all-time great PowerBooks, and Iˆm still getting superb service out of my 1998 233 MHz unit, but I would not spend any serious money on it. There is a law of diminishing returns that applies. The newest WallStreets are just shy of six years old; they are not officially supported by OS X 10.3 and later (although Ryan Rempelˆs XPostFacto pack can install Panther on a WallStreet), and they donˆt support USB or FireWire natively. I have both USB and FireWire PC card adapters for mine, but itˆs not quite the same thing. And the WallStreet only supports 512 megabytes of RAM, which I consider marginal for decent OS X support. The first thing I noticed walking around the floor after the Keynote Tuesday is that everyone was abuzz. The Apple staffers in their green shuffle shirts looked happy. The folks at the non-Apple booths were happy, or at least as happy as someone can be when they've nary a moment to breathe or grab a swig of water because they're talking nonstop about their new products. Yes, the show is smaller than it used to be, packed in to only one of Moscone Center's two exhibition halls, but this might not be a bad thing because the smaller size enhanced the feeling of mass interest in everything Apple. Apple today released the iPod shuffle, a flash-based MP3 device in 512MB ($99) and 1GB ($149) configurations. Available today at The Apple Store, the shuffle is small, about the size of a pack of gum, and connects to your Mac or PC via USB 2. It interfaces with iTunes and autofills with up to 240 songs. Music is controlled via click buttons and LED lights, and battery life is rated at 12 hours. It can also be used as data storage.

 Apple today introduced the Mac mini -- a $499 headless G4 Mac aimed at first-time Mac users and PC switchers. Available at The Apple Store beginning January 22nd, the mini will feature a 1.25GHz G4 processor, 40GB hard drive, 256MB RAM, and basic connectivity, such as DVI and VGA, FireWire, and USB 2, and a Combo optical drive. A 1.42GHz model with an 80GB hard drive will be available for $599. No monitor, keyboard, or mouse will be included with either model. The mini is quite small -- about the size of a large book. A SuperDrive and AirPort wireless connectivity are both optional.

I've been to MacWorld on the East Coast when they used to hold it at the Javits Center way over on the West Side of Manhattan. It was fun -- one year my friend Glen went to the Keynote and found a shiny new Apple optical mouse under his chair at the end. Another year I wandered around with a badge proclaiming me the CEO of Threebase Dot Com and people took me very seriously because of it. And this was back before I started blogging and was just using the domain for email and an occassional homebrew Flash project. One year I even saw a guy running down 30-something-th Street wielding a knife. Wild and wooly was MWNY in July, and I had a ball. "Mr. Moore: I read your article titled "Getting the best out of your new PowerBook or iBook" and found it very useful and precise. I'm the proud owner of a 1.25Mhz 15" Aluminum PowerBook G4 which is already a year and a month old but still runs like lightning (hey, it's an Apple) and one tip that has helped me immensely (although I realize might not be a need to all laptop users) has been to always carry with me a mouse and keyboard, Apple's Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse in my case. Not only are they top notch quality (again, it's an Apple) but easy to carry around in my laptop bag also. I carry my laptop with me from home to work to the coffeehouse and back to home pretty much every day and these two wireless wonders fit fine in my bag and allow me to have a much more comfortable use of my laptop. Besides, using my laptop's keyboard and track pad to the minimum has kept my laptop looking like new -no scratches or fingertip marks anywhere. As I said, I'm sure there are many users who might not find this useful for whatever reason, but I know there are equally tons of laptop users who would love it. Thank you."
I agree with Sergio 100 percent. I did mention external keyboards and mice in passing in the section on using laptop stands, but he's right -- they would have merited a separate section on their own. For desktop substitute duty with a laptop stand, just about any USB (or if supported, Bluetooth wireless) keyboard and pointing device to your liking will work fine. So in this week's edition of The PowerBook Mystique, we're going to look at some mice and keyboards particularly well-suited to stuffing in a laptop case or backpack and taking on the road.
