A Compact MacBook Pro Should Demand Few Compromises

I donˆt generally traffic in rumors, but it does seem more and more likely that a compact MacBook Pro to replace the discontinued 12¾ PowerBook is forthcoming in the not too distant future. Last week, applerecon.com posted the most comprehensive prognostication of a new professional subcompact Apple notebook that Iˆve run across yet. If Apple can actually deliver such a product, they should sell like proverbial hotcakes. Frankly, itˆs difficult to imagine how they could manage that few-compromises inventory of features in a tiny form factor weighing more than a pound less than the 12¾ PowerBook did. I really hope they can, because it sounds awesome, but recall that it took eight months before they figured out how to cram FireWire 800 and a dual-layer SuperDrive into the full-sized 15¾ MacBook Pro. With Vista's big rollout today, Mac users don't have any reason to get up bright and early to run out and get Microsoft's newest version of Windows. Mac users can yawn and not lose any sleep over it, and in fact, have yawned many times over after the numerous key features in Vista were revealed to be similar to Mac OS X. And when Microsoft's Bill Gates talked about the new operating system on national TV yesterday, one couldn't help but yawn again. On NBC's "Today Show" yesterday morning, Bill Gates appeared as a guest to talk about the release of Vista, and anchor Meredith Vieira hit him up on a couple of points that garnered answers Mac users have heard before. Is your ëBook ailing? Apple computers and the Mac OS are pretty reliable, but once in a while even Macs can have problems, and when the issue is disk-related, the tool I turn to first (and usually last) is Alsoftˆs superb disk diagnostic, maintenance, and repair utility, DiskWarrior. DiskWarrior, AlSoft Inc.ˆs flagship software product, acclaimed by many (including this writer) to be the hands-down best Mac OS disk maintenance utility, doesnˆt get updated very often. The original DiskWarrior for Mac OS Classic, first introduced in 1998, only ever made it to version 2.1. The OS X native version 3 didnˆt debut until 2004 (happily, DiskWarrior 2.1 worked just fine on OS X desks, albeit agonizingly slowly, until Apple terminated Classic bootability and directory format changes in OS 10.4 Tiger rendered DiskWarrior 2, and indeed the early versions of DiskWarrior 3 obsolete). Consequently, the release of DiskWarrior 4 only a couple of years after version 3 came on the scene is an extraordinarily fast upgrade turnaround for this product. Read More...

Macworld Expo 2007 will be memorable for at least two things - the announcement of the iPhone, and the extraordinary fact that it was the first Macworld Expo in history bereft of announcements of any new or updated Mac-branded products. Honestly, I was ambivalent about MWSF this year. On the one hand, I was excited to see just what Apple had up its sleeve for their "reinvention of the phone." On the other hand, I still don't own an Intel Mac and don't yet feel the need to. So while new Macs at the Keynote might have been exciting to some, to me they honestly wouldn't have meant that much. Don't get me wrong - advancements are great, and increased computing power means time and money to a lot of professionals out there. But as my career has become more specialized, so have my computing needs. And while it'd be nice to be able to edit video faster, sort through photos in less time, and preview Web sites in IE for Windows without having to walk across the room to borrow my wife's laptop, the truth is that none of this things are really that critical to my work. So long as I can write, IM, Skype, FTP, Email, and successfully browse Web sites (including several Web-based applications and content management interfaces), I can work. So by now you all know what happened. No new Mac hardware and hardly a mention of Leopard at the Keynote. Demos of iLife '06 at the Apple Booth '07. All eyes on a cell phone, and some on a set-top box for televisions. And gone is the word "computer" from the company name. So what's the future for our favorite computer company of the past 30 years? Media. Selling media and selling the hardware and software to play media. Distribution deals with big media companies. Partnerships with infrastructure companies to get the media to you in new, more portable ways. The only new Mac at MacWorld San Francisco this year wasn't even from Apple (iPhone and Apple TV are essentially computers, but neither has "Mac" in its name). Other World Computing and Axiotron teamed up to unveil the ModBook, a MacBook + Mod Kit + Installation Service that yields the world's first production OS X tablet computer. Yesterday I got a demo of the ModBook as well as the chance to chat with Axiotron President Andreas Haas about the product. My take? Happy New Year! Like most of you I'll be checking in via the Web Monday morning to see what Steve took the wraps off of during his Keynote Address at MacWorld San Francisco. An alignment of the technology planets scheduled MWSF and CES during the same week this year, and I'll be making the trek out to Las Vegas to cover the first few days of the consumer electronics spectacular before coming home to the SF Bay area to head to MacWorld on Wednesday.
Don't worry - our very own Joe Leo will be at the Moscone Center bright and early Monday to bring you the lowdown on all the Mac happenings, so check in starting at 9 am Pacific Time to get the scoop (and our live coverage of the Keynote - Ed).
I have no insider information, and likely you're as tired as I am of the MacWorld Rumor Mill at this point. So instead of predictions, I'll leave you with a quick rundown of the things I'll be keeping an eye out for next week. 2007 promises to be another huge year for Apple; honestly, I think they'll all be huge years until the company's run ends with Jobs stepping down for one reason or another. In the lead-up to Macworld 2007, there are numerous rumors floating around in regard to products that Apple will announce and reveal to the world. But there's one thing on this columnist's mind in regard to one announcement--in regard to Leopard--that we don't see mentioned anywhere around the web among the Mac-centric news and rumor sites. And we said yesterday that PBCentral.com isn't a rumor site! (Well, it isn't). Since the next version of Mac OS X, code-named "Leopard," is not a surprise--after all, it's available for all to take a look at on Apple's website and was previewed by Steve Jobs last summer--not too much attention is being placed, in our opinion, on what announcements will come next week in regard to the updated OS. Hadley Stern over at AppleMatters posted a column last week entitled ¶Ode to the 12¾ Powerbook: 14 Wishes for A New Hyper-Portable Macbook.¾ Like me, Hadley is hoping that Apple has a real replacement for the Little Al Book in the works. I can get behind most of that prescription in theory, although I think that such a comprehensive feature-set would be very difficult to deliver within a ¶Shockingly thin and shockingly sturdy¾ form factor -or even one at least as small and light as the erstwhile 12¾ PowerBook, which itself never supported FireWire 800 or a PC Card slot, let alone a built-in iSight camera, gps, or evdo. Personally, I could happily live without any of the latter-mentioned items, although an ExpressCard 34 slot would be a nice addition. I also am not that enchanted with the MagSafe technology, which so far has obviated the availability of third-party power adapters for the MacBooks and MacBook Pros, although I suppose it is now obligatory on Apple notebooks. PBCentral.com came across this news via the Apple rumor mill, MacRumors.com (this columnist has their Apple website page linked to the start page, which is different from Apple's main home page) who reported yesterday that Cupertino had a New Year's greeting for all. But they label it more as a "teaser" stating, "The last time Apple posted pre-Macworld teasers was in 2002" which readers can infer by way of MacRumors.com's posting that 2002 was the last time Apple made really big announcements that affected the Mac world as we know it.
