We've received a few more reports on delays associated with 15" PowerBooks:
"When calling Apple to return my 15" Al PBwith white spots, the tech told me 5-7 weeks for a replacement..."
"I had it confirmed today that my 15" Powerbook ordered in early October and scheduled for shipment on 10/24 will now be at least 2 to 3 weeks. While frustrated, my hope is that the result of my patience will be an LCD screen and a latch that function with none of the reported issues."

Some customers are reporting delays in receiving their 15" PowerBooks from The Apple Store:
"Just a short note to say that Apple is now back to having an approximately 3 week wait for Powerbook G4ˆs as of October 28th. They are suggesting a target send date of November 15th. In the case of mine, I originally ordered a new Powerbook G4 ¶Superdrive¾ 15inch on Sept 20th, I did not receive the item until October 10th. When the machine arrived, it had a broken clutch (the part that holds the LCD to the base). Apple was happy to replace the computer, and told me that I would have a replacement within 5 days. Well after waiting 4 of the 5 days, they called last night to tell me that there is now a 3 week wait for the product."
As you can see on our 15" PowerBook Price Tracker, Apple is reporting a 10-15 day waiting period for new 15" PowerBooks. 1.25GHz PowerBooks are also in short supply at other resellers, while the 1GHz model is widely available. Sendstation Systems has given iPod owners something they can really use, an adapter that turns any standard 6-pin Firewire cable into an iPod dock connector cable. The benefits of the Pocket Dock are twofold: First, you can use it to connect your iPod to a Mac for charging and file transfers using any standard Firewire cable. New G4 iBooks: Pros and Cons

Apple served up a solid upgrade with the new iBook G4s, but they aren't perfect. Here's a rundown of their pros and cons:
Pros:
- G4 processor up to 1GHz
- Up to 60GB Ultra ATA hard drives
- 256K L2 cache running at the same speed as the CPU
- ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM
- AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth support
- Mac OS X 10.3 preinstalled
- Two USB 2.0 ports
- Slot-loading optical drive
Cons:
- 640MB maximum RAM limit. Still.
- Only 256MB RAM standard
- 133MHz system bus
- No SuperDrive option
- No sub-$1000 model
- No mid-range 12" model
In the end, the pros outweigh the cons, and the new iBooks will likely be strong sellers. However, a 640MB RAM ceiling is a real big bugaboo, in our minds. We also feel that the new iBooks should have a BTO SuperDrive option. Yes, that is more of a 'Pro' feature, but the ability to burn DVDs is becoming more and more important, especially in the Education market. If the eMac has a SuperDrive option, shouldn't the iBook?

Apple today introduced new iBooks with G4 processors. The new models come in configurations ranging up to 1GHz and now include such things as slot-loading Combo drives, ATI Mobility RADEON 9200 graphics cards with 32MB DDR video memory, DDR RAM, AirPort Extreme compatibility, Bluetooth compatilibility, and Mac OS X 10.3.

PowerBook shipping reports continue to come in. Send us your report, and we'll include it (anonymously) below: "Just placed my order through the Apple for EDU... Got a 1.25 w/60Gig On or before 10/28 :( Hurry !!" "I ordered a 15 PB on Set. 27 and received it on Oct 4. This week after reading about Panther's release, I went and qualified it for the $20 up to date program. Apple did add another $4.50 to the order for s&h. Today I checked my order and low and behold Apple did right me. They had taken the extra $4.50 off the order all on their own. Thanks Apple!" "I ordered a cutom built powerbook setp 29th.. It had an estimated ship date of oct 6.. first of all i would like to note that apples communication is HORRIBLE. i went through the apple instant loan and they didn't process that untill today! so yeah, it's not as instant as they claim. Now that the loan is processed, my ship date is oct 27?!?!!!! how is that possible? it will take more than a month for me to get my product.. I'm a switch user that is not so impressed!" "I am back again with an update to my previously sent message...... "I ordered the 15.2" / 1.25GHZ with a single 512MB chip (default on the BTO is two 256MB chips) on 9-16. My original ship date was on or before 9/22/2003 but that has been adjusted twice. The first time it was adjusted to 9/24/2003. Currently my order is "open" with an expected ship date of on or before 9/30/2003." Since then Apple has dropped the ball in a major way. I received three more ship dates, the first October 1st, the second October 3rd, and the last one for October 6th. It appears that on October 1st and again on October 3rd when they processed my order for the single PowerBook for some reason they attempted to authorize that single purchase three times with my credit card company. Twice on the first day and once more on Oct. 3rd. Each time they would seek authorization it was a hold on my card for the total amount of the purchase and according to my credit card company it was authorized by them on each of the three occasions it was submitted. So not only did they max out my credit card in error I still don't have my PowerBook. When I talked to the customer service rep to straighten out the credit card mistake I was told I would have my PowerBook by Oct 8th (today) at the latest. Currently my order status shows "Shipped Oct. 1" and the tracking number provided is for the dreaded "Taiwan" shipment everyone else has been referring to. Guess what, no PowerBook yet at noon pacific time and I am in Nevada, not exactly miles and miles from Cupertino." "Re-ordered my replacement 15" BTO 1.25 SD on the 26th. It cleared Customs on the morning of the 3rd (October) and arrived Monday 6 October. The original had a balky latch. The new one is light years better in that regard and I am glad I took the 10 day hit to get a replacment." "On 9/23 I ordered 15" 1.0 GHz via the education channel from the Apple Store, upgraded to 80 MB 5400 HDrive and Airport Card. First shipping date was 9/30; that slipped to 10/7, today. Got email saying it was shipping. Airborne tracking shows no status, but was being shipped from Lake Forest, IL, via ground. I'll see if the shipping notice is indeed dated from its departure from IL, not Taiwan." "I ordered MacConnection's bundle of a new PB 15" Superdrive, plus Airport base station & AppleCare, on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The sales guy assured me that the stock was coming in that very afternoon. Airborne must have been really burning the rubber as I ordered it on October 1st (backordered), Shipped on the 3rd and received it on the 6th (today) using ground shipping! From Ohio to Cal in three days!" "I was happy to report last week that my PowerBook shipped 10/1 as originally scheduled. However, as of 10/6 none of the Airborne tracking numbers I have been given work, and Apple Customer Care says 'We can't tell you where it is, somewhere between Taiwan and Colorado.'" "The "built" 12-inch Superdrive PowerBook ordered through AppleStore for Education, individual K-12, is on the FedEx truck for delivery to my house. Originally ordered previous 12" PowerBook model on 9/14 and was automatically upgraded by Apple to new PowerBook. Original shipping date was 9/25 which was changed to 10/3 and met." "I ordered a 15" 1.25GHz PowerBook CTO Combo drive and 60 GB drive (part number Z07E02CQZ) on September 24th at around noon from the Apple Store web site. It was estimated to ship on October 1st. It didn't, and it was bumped to the 10th. After several phone calls, I spoke with a manager on the 3rd who told me that it was built and was estimated to ship by the end of day Tuesday. On the morning of *Sunday* the 5th I received a shipping notification with a FedEx tracking number, showing the package leaving Taoyuan City about three hours prior. Go figure. Maybe my wheel sounded a little squeaky while I was on the phone. Thanks for the web site. I've been checking it more than daily as I wait not so patiently for my new friend to arrive in the mail." "On 9/28 I placed my order via the Apple Store web interface. I selected a 15.2" 1.25 Ghz Powerbook with the 5400 rpm disk and Combo Drive. The 'ship on or before' date quoted was 10/6/2003. On 10/4, I received 2 emails from Apple, both stating that the order had shipped from the "F/G Distribution Center, Elk Grove, Ca". One email said that the order had shipped 10/3 and the other said 10/4. The shipping was listed as 'Airborne Express', but the supplied tracking number does not appear to be of the correct format for that shipper. I called Apple to check on the status, and was told by a rather brusque fellow that my order was in fact shipping from Taiwan, and that I shouldn't expect to see it for 6-8 days.

What people need to realize is they'll get shipment confirmation when the laptop leaves Taiwan - but from there it's first going to one of Apple's consolidation centers on a large pallet with other laptops. Once Apple receives it, it's broken out into the individual orders, and that's the point where one or two day shipping kicks in. My laptop shipped from Taiwan on 10/1, arriving at Apple's Illinois center on 10/3. Now it's coming here!" "I ordered a 15” top end PB on 09.19 from the Apple Store. Originally to ship 09.23, then 10.03, and now 10.15!! Have called the customer service rep three times, he doesn’t call back. "I ordered a 15" Superdrive 1.25 GHz Powerbook bundle from MacConnection on 22 September. I was told it would ship in 3-7 days. When I checked the online status, I was told it was still on back order. When I called and spoke to a person last week, I was told it was scheduled to ship by Friday, 26 September. It didn't. When I called on Tuesday of this week, I was told it was due to ship later that day. It didn't. When I sent an e-mail to them on Wednesday, I received the following reply today: 'Hello, and thank you for your e-mail. I apologize for the wait on this constrained computer. Unfortunately our ETA's have not been met by Apple. Currently, we are hoping to receive stock on approximately 10/24/03, give or take a few days. Considering the circumstances, this cannot be guaranteed. I am very sorry for the inconvenience this delay may cause you. Please let us know should you need to make any changes to the order. Thank you.' When I checked the MacConnection web site a few minutes ago, it still claimed a "3-7 day" product availability. Caveat emptor!"
"I ordered a 15.2inch PowerBook from Amazon on 9/30/2003, with an shipping date of Oct 1. Delivery date was sent in my confirmation as Oct 2. It has not arrived, and I contacted customer service. They told me that they it has left, however they cannot provide a tracking number. I told them I payed for 1 day shipping, and I need to know where it is because it is useless delivered late. They kindly told me that they shipping department would have to email me in 1-2 days, and if I don't want it late, to refuse delivery. You're hereby warned!"

The Apple Store has two factory-refurbished PowerBooks available. They have the 17" 1GHz PowerBook available for $2499 and the 12" 867MHz PowerBook G4/SuperDrive available for $1399. "I ordered the 12"/combo/airport extreme/applecare bundle with 2 day shipping from MacConnection on 9/24. They said it would ship 9/30. It shipped today (10/01), and this was reflected in MacConnection's order tracking system at around 11 p.m. Pacific time. It's been shipped via Airborne Domestic, three separate parcels with three tracking numbers. So far, there is no info provided by Airborne for the tracking numbers, but it's early. We shall see."
"I just spent $4200 bucks Canadian not including rebate on my first Mac (1.25, 80ghd, bla bla bla) including an Ipod, and a Canon printer as well as ApplCare of course. Well, I have received everything except my Powerbook! I haven't even cracked the packaging on the other stuff. Placed my order on 9/24/03 with an expected ship date of 9/30/03. Of course on the 30th I get this notice telling me that they won't be able to ship the thing until on or before the 15th of October! What gives? "Apple quoted me a 10/1 shipping date for my bto 15" 1.25 ghz with 1 512 RAM chip., today it was pushed back to the 10th...annoyingly, they quote 5-7 business days for this same getup on their site were I to order it today.....seems I'll have to be a squeaky wheel tomorrow morning.....sadly, "speaking to the supervisor" seems to be the only way to get Apple to do what they say they're going to do these days."

Best Buy has the new 15" 1GHz PowerBook G4/Combo available for order for $1999.99. Most notebooks at Best Buy qualify for a $150 mail-in rebate, and the new 15" 1GHz model apparently qualifies for this rebate. That reduces the price to $1849.99 -- the lowest price we've seen from any Apple Authorized Reseller (Note: One page on Best Buy's site states that the $150 notebook rebate is valid on all notebooks but PowerBooks and iBooks. The product page for the 15" 1GHz PowerBook, however, states that the $150 rebate is valid for that model. You should probably verify that the rebate is valid before you purchase.)

Original estimated ship date was 9/25/03, then was changed to 10/03/03. Received email from Apple Store this morning (10/01/03) that it has been shipped FedEx and is expected to be delivered (standard delivery) to me in Boston 10/06/03."
"Ordered my 15" 1.25 AlBook Sep. 20th by phone (education order). It's BTO, changed to combo drive and one 512 chip. Shipping date was Sep. 29th, but got an email on 29th changing shipping date to 10/6. So I guess I'm guaranteed a Powerbook shipping or another email by the 6th :\"

Along with it I ordered Applecare, Airport Extreme Base station, and Final Cut Express ($99 offer) on the 19th. Was slated to ship on or before the 26th, battery to ship on or before October 10th. Everything arrived, but on the night of the 26th they changed the status on the 15" to on or before the 3rd... Waiting until the 3rd for them to change it to on or before the 10th...."
