Yesterday's article comparing the 12" 1.33GHz PowerBook G4/Combo to the new 12" 1.2GHz iBook G4/Combo generated a number of opinions from our readers. Here are some of their comments:

"Of course, there's the infamous crippling of the iBook's video card so that it won't display larger than 1024x768 on an external monitor, and can only mirror. That's a deal breaker for MANY of us. Frankly, if the PowerBooks and/or iBooks had removable hard drive capabilities, I'd have BOTH my 17-inch PowerBook AND a 12-inch model, so I could take the smaller one on flights instead of the 17-inch model, with my normal home directory and all its files. If PC-card hard drives were large enough and the 12-inch PowerBook had a PCMCIA slot, we might have a shot at it. That said, I'm watching carefully for another 15-inch PowerBook deal w/no sales tax, because it doesn't look like I'll ever see such a solution."

"Interesting that you ask whether the PowerBook is worth the extra six bills, since I've been wondering that myself. I prefer the look of the PowerBook; I also think it has the better keyboard of the two. But with a slight speed bump and an AirPort card included -- plus Appleworks in case you don't feel like springing for Office -- the iBook is clearly the better buy for the average Joe, and will probably steal customers like me away from the PowerBook if I finally decide to retire my G3 "Pismo" PowerBook. Incidentally, I'm a free-lance writer and cartoonist who depends on Word, Photoshop and a couple of very indulgent editors for his skittles."

"Nice comparison, but you left off one critical difference: the PBook can use an external monitor for dual display (up to 2048 x 1536 pixels), whereas the iBook can use an external monitor only for video mirroring."

"There are a few other things you gain and lose between the two. An iBook cannot be run in "lid-closed" mode, when you shut the display, the machine goes to sleep. A PowerBook can be woken up with the display closed when connected to power, a monitor and a USB or Bluetooth keyboard. The iBook also only officially supports display mirroring (easily fixed with display doctor), where as the PowerBook can mirror or run dual displays out of the box. Having both the PowerBook (now previous generation) iBook, I can also tell you that the iBook battery does run slightly longer, 30 minutes to an hour longer depending on what you're doing."
