This week, TechNewsWorld's Rob Enderle posted a fascinating prognostication of what's coming next year in New Apple hardware. Rob's predictions cover the entire Mac computer range, but of course I found his focus on iBooks and PowerBooks especially intriguing. I have no idea what Rob's source of intelligence is in making these predictions, whether insider leaks, educated guesswork, or a combination of both, but if he's right, it may well be worth hunkering down to wait for making your next system upgrade.

The New PowerBooks - Last Of The PowerPC Line?

I'll cop to being just a bit disappointed with the latest and probably last of the PowerPC PowerBooks Apple unveiled in New York yesterday. Not surprised, since the rumor mills over the past week had things pretty well nailed, dampening hopes for a CPU upgrade to Freescale's MPC 7448 G4 chip.
The 7448 chip is pin-compatible with the existing 7447, so no motherboard reengineering would have been necessary, and it would offer increased performance even with only a modest increase clock speed from the current 1.67 GHZ to perhaps 1.7 GHz. The current 7447x series chips Apple uses have a 512 kb L2 cache but no L3 cache, and a maximum bus speed of 167 MHz. The 7447 tops out at 1.67 GHz. The G4 7448 chip, based on Freescaleˆs e600 PowerPC core, which includes the Altivec 'velocity engine' that provides optimized OS X applications with enhanced performance with the system bus running up to 200 MHz, along with 1 MB of L2 cache. I'm not quite sure what Richard Siklos is thinking. He writes, in yesterday's New York Times:
"The obvious shortcoming of the video iPod (at least in its first iteration) is that by being Internet-based it can offer a scant library of material. Apart from Disney's hits and whatever else iTunes offers in coming months, other media giants like NBC Universal have not yet fully digitized their vast libraries of shows and movies and made them available via the Internet."
Here's the thing, Richard: Geeks will find a way around this quote-unquote shortcoming and the rest of the populous won't care. Americans are nothing if not bcreatures of pay-for-play convenience. To that end, $1.99 tv shows suit them (us?) just fine. The iPod shuffle Fan Book is the latest in O'Reilly's Fan Book series, and a companion volume to the previously released iPod Fan Book by Yasukuni Notomi (see review below), which was a translation and reprint of a book originally released in Japanese. This one is an original made in America edition by J.P. Biersdorfer. The book retains the general design motif of the iPod Fan Book, however, and that's no bad thing, because it's attractive and packs a lot of information into a handy pocketable 6-inch square, 90 page volume.  Apple introduced video iPods today in 30GB ($299) and 60GB ($399) configurations capable of storing up to 150 hours of video. The new iPod has a 2.5 inch color screen which is 0.5 inches larger than previous models. Introduced alongside iTunes 6.0, the new iPods are video-capable, and Apple will begin selling music videos via their iTunes music store for $1.99 each. "With its 320 x 240-pixel QVGA color display, iPod lets you view photos and watch MPEG-4 and H.264 video wherever you go. View your own videos, or watch music videos and TV shows you can purchase from the iTunes Music Store." Other capabilities are equal to those in previous models, although Apple boasts a 20 hour battery life with the video iPods.

The ability to operate under battery power is both the raison d'etre and the Achilles' heel of portable computers. In theory, battery powered computing is wonderful. You can slip the surly bonds of cords and wires, and compute freely wherever you please, and with Airport even surf the Internet or a LAN if you're in range of a base station.
The serpent in this garden of portable computer delights is the limited range of battery charge life. This aspect of portable computing is of course a lot better with today's PowerBooks and iBooks than it was in fairly recent yesteryear. I recall a PowerBook 165c belonging to a friend of mine that could barely eke out an hour's use on a charge of its nickel cadmium (NiCad) battery.
Things improved markedly with the Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) cells introduced with the 500 series 'Books and '040 Duos in 1994, and carried over in the 5300/190 and 1400 series. I found that I could manage about one and one-half to two hours of the sort of computing I do on battery power with my grayscale 5300. Read More...
