Last January as I walked the main floor at MacWorld San Francisco, I kept hearing the same refrain over and over from exhibitors, journalists, and consumers alike. "This is more like iPod World than MacWorld," they said - some with glee, some with annoyance, almost all with incredulity. I certainly felt it, too - for every Mac-centric exhibitor on the floor there was at least one iPod-focused shop, hawking cases or speakers or transmitters or all three. The iPod dock toilet paper dispenser I found in the far reaches of the hall really hammered home to me just how much of a consumer electronics-cum-media company Apple (aka Apple Computer) had become. Ironic as it sounds, the recent Apple battery recall may have saved my iBook's life. While I'm not yet ready for an upgrade, my iBook's battery was down to less than an hour of use per charge and as such my laptop was more or less permanently tethered to its power cord. While new batteries are obviously available for quite a bit less than new MacBooks, you know how the upgrade game goes: A battery begets some RAM, which begets a new hard drive, which in turn makes you think if $400 on upgrades shouldn't just become $1,000 on a new machine.
So I was pondering my upgrade options when laptop batteries around the world suddenly started catching on fire and Dell and Sony and then Apple started recalling them. I was in luck - my battery hadn't caught on fire but was being recalled. I figured the four to six weeks Apple said it would take to ship me a replacement was worth my iBook's getting a new lease on (power cord-free) life. Read More...

MacBook Pro “Revision B” Arrives

If you’ve been holding off upgrading to a MacBook Pro because you avoid version 1 of anything, that’s no longer a roadblock. On Tuesday, Apple announced “revision B” of the MacBook Pro - both the 15” model which will be available immediately, and the 17” top-of-the-line which is scheduled to ship next week.
The biggest change in the new MacBook Pros is that they are all powered by Intel Core 2 Duo Processors with 4MB (double the previous spec.) of shared L2 cache -running 2.16 GHz and 2.33 GHz clockspeeds in the 15-incher, and 2.33 GHz only for the big ‘un. While those represent only a modest speed bump form the former 2.0 GHz and 2.16 GHz specs. of the preceding Core Duo models, Core 2 Duo GHz are huskier than Core Duo GHz, and Apple claims performance up to 39 percent faster than the revision A 2.16 GHz MacBook Pros, and more than seven times faster than the ultimate 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4 models.  Apple released new 15" and 17" MacBook Pros today updated with Intel Core 2 Duo processors ranging from 2.16GHz to 2.33GHz.
Three models are available; a 15" 2.16GHz MacBook Pro for $1999, a 15" 2.33GHz MacBook Pro for $2499, and a 17" 2.33GHz MacBook Pro for $2799. In addition to the new Core 2 Duo processors, Apple increased standard RAM configurations to 1GB for the low-end 15" model and 2GB for the 2.33GHz MacBook Pros. Hard drive capacity has been increased to 120GB for 15" MacBook Pros and 160GB for the 17" model. Optical drives range from a 6x DL SuperDrive for 15" MacBook Pros up to an 8x DL SuperDrive for the 17" model.
Configure-to-order options at The Apple Store include up to 3GB of installed RAM, the addition of a 200GB 4200RPM hard drive, and the option of a free Glossy Display.
The Apple Store is reporting a 2-4 business day wait for the new 15" MacBook Pros and a 7-10 business day wait for the 17" 2.33GHz MacBook Pro. Apple recently acknowledged the problems associated with the 10.4.8 update to Mac OS X that was making certain portable computers exhibit signs of the blues. The problem seemed to be concentrated with MacBook users, but also unofficially affected users ranging from Mac desktops, to a specific 12" PowerBook user... one who writes for this site. [See related article entitled, "Has Your 'Book been Exhibiting Signs of the Blues?"] The problem that surfaced was an apparent blue tint to one's monitor / screen which was not present until after the user updated from Mac OS X v10.4.7, to the newest v10.4.8. With the great news that came out this week in regard to Apple's growing market share and everything else related to it, namely, Microsoft and other competitors, it's beginning to look a lot like "1984" all over again. We know naysayers will say we're counting our chickens before they've hatched, and that this news means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Okay. "You say tomato, I say eat chicken (crow)." Can you dispute some of the analysts' predictions, reviews, and research that came out this week and last? On Wednesday, Apple released its fourth quarter earnings and a press release on their website states that, "Apple shipped 1,610,000 Macintosh computers and 8,729,000 iPods during the quarter, representing a 30 percent growth in Macs and 35 percent growth in iPods over the year-ago quarter." As much as I love the Mac operating systems, and admire the coolness and elegance of Mac hardware, I find Apple’s generally unfriendly policy toward user repairs and upgrading, and the often fiendishly difficult to work on Apple products that reflect that philosophy frustrating. Philosophically and temperamentally, I’m a do-it-yourselfer, and as such in some ways much more sympatico with the freebooting, mix and match motif of the PC world and the Open Source software movement. I’ve always tinkered with my cars and done most of my own auto repairs. The saving grace with my Macs has been that they have for the most part been very reliable, and have required very little attention.
