 The 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook G4 is available for $2299 at The Apple Store if you choose an internal Combo Drive, as opposed to the standard SuperDrive, as a build-to-order option. That's a $200 savings. This is an attractive option only if you have no intention of burning DVDs. What's the difference between the two types of drives? According to Apple:
"Combo drives (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) have the capability of creating music and data CDs and reading DVD disks. The drive writes to CD-R at 24x and CD-RW at 16x, reads DVDs at 8x, and reads CDs at 24x. The drive supports CD-ROM, CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, CD-I, Mixed Mode CD, Photo CD, Video CD, Enhanced CD, DVD-Video, and DVD-ROM media.
SuperDrives (DVD-R/CD-RW) allow you to create music and data CDs, read DVDs, and create DVD-video discs for playback on most standard DVD players. Along with Apple's iDVD software (included on all systems) your PowerBook G4 is a full-featured DVD authoring studio. The SuperDrive reads DVDs at 8x, writes to DVD-R at 4x, reads CDs at 24x, writes to CD-R at 16x, and writes to CD-RW at 8x. Blogger Vegard Skjefstad says: "Last week the dockable DVD/CD-RW combo drive in my laptop suddenly ejected itself, flew two metres through the air and went bang in the floor. Miraculously, it looked undamaged and I re-attached it to the computer. The light in the front blinked like it was supposed to and the drive appeared in Windows Explorer, so I figured everything was OK. Wrong.......so, I thought that if I were to spend $150 on a new CD drive, I might as well go wild and buy myself a new computer. My trusty Dell is about two years old now, and it's starting to lag behind."
Trusty? :-b. My 12" iBook is also about two years old, and it hasn't missed a beat so far. But I digress. Back to Vegard's chronicle. "And I want an Apple. Give the man a PowerBook G4! At least it was a good idea until I checked the price. Those things are f***ing expensive! I can get a pretty hard-core laptop from Dell for the price of a 15-inch PowerBook. I was able to put together a PC with far better specs than the PowerBook, and it cost me $300 less. So I won't be buying a computer from Apple any time soon."

The 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook G4 is available for $2299 at The Apple Store if you choose an internal Combo Drive, as opposed to the standard SuperDrive, as a build-to-order option. That's a $200 savings. This is an attractive option only if you have no intention of burning DVDs. What's the difference between the two types of drives? According to Apple:
"Combo drives (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) have the capability of creating music and data CDs and reading DVD disks. The drive writes to CD-R at 24x and CD-RW at 16x, reads DVDs at 8x, and reads CDs at 24x. The drive supports CD-ROM, CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, CD-I, Mixed Mode CD, Photo CD, Video CD, Enhanced CD, DVD-Video, and DVD-ROM media.

Our 12" PowerBook vs. 12" iBook comparison generated a fair number of reader comments. Since we posted those reports, we received a few other comments pertinent to the discussion:
"After reading your comparison yesterday, I went to CompUSA (we don't have an Apple Store yet) and did a side-by-side comparison of the 12" screens on the iBook and the PowerBook. I ran the same DVD movie on both and set them side-by-side. The difference was startling. The colors, the ability to see any detail at all in dark scenes under the harsh CompUSA lighting, and the viewable angle on the 12" PowerBook made the 12" iBook look like 1980's technology. I was surprised at the difference. Apple must be buying its iBook screens from a far inferior and cheaper supplier. iBook shoppers, be sure you are willing to accept the difference before spending any $$$!"
"One thing that's been left out of the comparison so far is AirPort range. My PB 1.33 12" consistently gets at least one bar less reception than my girlfriend's iBook G4 800. This is (I think) a widely reported discrepancy. On the plus side, the powerbook's keyboard is definitely better."

The Apple Store reports a 1-2 week wait for new 20" iMac G5s. However, some people are receiving their iMacs faster than that:
"I ordered a 20" G5 iMac on 10/26/04, and even though The Apple Store said 3-4 weeks at the time, it shipped the same day from China," reported one reader. He later said that delivery was attempted on Monday the 1st.

Keyspan sent us a sample of their USB Server, a pocket-size device that lets you put up to four USB devices on an Ethernet network and access them remotely. The USB Server is a straightforward box that, despite a few limitations, can add a great deal of flexibility to an office or home network environment in which multiple users share various USB devices. Though Keyspan doesn't offer support for all possible USB devices, I tested the server with a variety of gadgets from hard drives to a multifunction printer/scanner and found it to work quite well.
