I've had my new iPod 5G for about a month now, and already I'm looking for a digital audio-equipped cell phone so I can leave the iPod at home. It's not so much that I'm afraid of damaging my iPod in my backpack or at the gym, though it is so thin as to seem a bit delicate. Rather, this latest version of the iPod feels so much like a full-fledged handheld computer that it got me looking at my cellphone wondering why it doesn't do more.

Feelings of gadget inadequacy always lead me to ebay in search of the latest uber-gizmos from around the world that actually can do more. And even though I've played with my friend's Treo, held a RAZR in the Cingular store, and spied the N90 and N71 on Gizmodo and Engadget, I was still amazed by feature sets and spec sheets as I got sucked deeper and deeper into ebay's "Cell Phones -> Phones Only" category listings.

Not only does the keyboard on these machines light up, it automatically senses and adapts illumination intensity to the level of ambient light in the room. In low light the PowerBook automatically lowers its display backlight and turns on the backlit keyboard. Then light-emitting fiber optic strands located under the keyboard's laser-etched keys come to life and illuminate the backlit keyboard so you can continue to work, A light sensor automatically adjusts both the keyboard and screen brightness.

Unfortunately, this feature is not available on the 12-inch PowerBook or any of the iBook models, nor of course on any pre-aluminum PowerBook model. A tutorial posted by the French Web site MacBidouille (or HardMac as the English language version is called) on hotrodding older G4 iBooks closer to PowerBook status has received a lot of interest and comment around the Mac Web. It's the sort of project that appeals to many tech-oriented folks who like to tinker with, modify, and upgrade their computers. The operative question is, however, in objective terms, does doing something like this make any economic sense?

Actually, most upgrades of older system hardware beg the same question. In some cases, I think upgrading can be worthwhile and cost-effective. The 550 MHz G4 processor upgrade, larger hard drive, 8x SuperDrive, and FireWire 800 PC Card adapter in my Pismo PowerBook are a case in point. These modifications have extended be useful life of that wonderful old laptop by at least two years. But they don't make Pismos anymore. Read More...

Either there's serious money to be made in iPod swag or the folks at Speck Products don't care. They've always made nifty, well-built accessories for iPods, and were super-nice to chat with when I met them at MacWorld last January. Then they came out with iGuy and I thought they'd all gone and lost their minds. It was iPod meets Gumby, and at first I thought it was a joke. But it must have done alright because Speck's at it again wtih no fewer than nine new cases to keep your nano cozy. It's like a friend that chartered the adoption of OS X in a big ol' chemical company told me, "when I opened my PowerBook up in a meeting for the first time, it was uncomfortable, because it was like having a key to the executive washroom - everyone thought that the PowerBook was a sign of, well, power - those who were upwardly mobile got PowerBooks and the rest of you saps are stuck with crappy plastic Dell boxes."

Ah, the PowerBook Mystique at work! I'll concede that there are a few interesting and attractive PC laptops, for example the Acer Ferrari Athlon 64 unit that regular readers of this column know I'm a vicarious admirer of, and I always thought the higher-end IBM ThinkPads had panache (it'll be interesting to see how they fare design-wise under Lenovo's corporate umbrella). iBook Outshines 12" PowerBook In Some Key Performance/Value Aspects

Last week I wrote here about what we might see is Apple PowerBooks and iBooks when the first Intel-based Macs begin arriving next year. But according to the projected schedule, there are about eight months to go before the MacIntel debut, so in the meantime indications are that Apple is now going to ride out the end of the Power PC era with the current portable platforms, all pretty long in the tooth (the newest design among them being the now 26 month old 15 inch PowerBook), but still amazingly avant garde except for processor speed.

While some continue to hold out hope for another round of Power PC revisions before next June, I'm inclined to think otherwise. I could be mistaken of course, but I just can't envision Apple concentrating much of its development resources on lame duck Power PC machines that this stage of the game. Read More...
