Those darn MacBooks and their darn built-in iSight webcam. Why can't I have an integrated webcam for my iBook G4? Now I can, sort of. Ecamm's Image USB Webcam doesn't actually meld into the frame around my iBook's monitor, but it does sit neatly atop its top edge, and the iMage's white plastic body makes it look like it was always supposed to be there. CNBC reports that Apple's sales for iPods and Macs are heating up, with shares at an all-time high, up 75% since July (from $50 to $90) and 13% just this month alone, and the holiday shopping rush is only helping fan those flames. And they say the holiday shopping for Apple--for both buyer and seller--has only just begun. The top story yesterday evening on the CNBC business news program, "On the Money," (weeknights, 7:00p EST) was a report on the increase in iPod/Mac sales and what they think all of this will mean for the company. "Let's start with Apple, closing in on $100. It is an iPod/Mac Christmas! The stock is telling you the things are selling faster than ever!" said Anchor Dylan Ratigan as he began the night's news line-up. Ratigan reported that 6 out of the 10 top electronics selling on Amazon.com for the holidays are all...? iPods. Furthermore, current data shows that sales of iPods are directly influencing Mac hardware sales which have seen a sudden increase in only recent months. I've been waiting for this one. I couldn't have cared less about those earlier iPod recording attachments because they only recorded in mono through a built-in mic. That's great for students and field reporters who conduct interviews a lot, but me I'm a musician. Sure, I'm a writer, too, but I rarely interview people. So I don't want to use my iPod to record hours of talking voices in mono. I want to use it to record my band playing in stereo.
XtremeMac's new MicroMemo audio recorder for iPod with Video and iPod nano 2G supports stereo recording at up to 16-bit, 44kHz quality through an external microphone. That alone made me want to give it the coveted "Five Books" rating. I practically wrote the review before I got the thing out of its packaging and snapped onto my iPod. But, in the interest of objectivity I held back and actually tried the thing out first. I'm happy to report that it's generally excellent. I'm a little sad to report, however, that it's not perfect enough to warrant Five Books. I gave it four and a half ... here's why. Read More...

With the release of the Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros and MacBooks this fall it appears, at least in the early going, that there are now stable, debugged ¶revision B¾ MacIntel portables available, which, to me at least, makes the upgrade path ahead a whole lot clearer. The unfolding of the MacIntel era for Apple notebooks has been surprisingly rapid. This time last year, there were no MacIntels, and the venerable PowerBook and iBook G4ˆs were still the state of the art. Personally, I was still using a nearly three-year-old G3 iBook as my main production machine and pondering whether to go with one more Power PC ëBook for my next system upgrade or go against my policy of never buying version one of any computer and rolling the dice with a new MacIntel when they arrived. So let's say Apple does build a killer iPodPhone that somehow manages to combine the best features of portable music and cellular calling with that certain Apple je ne sais qua. What do they do then? First off, the success of the iTunes Music Store is enough proof for me that Apple's not going to be satisfied with a profit margin on an iPhone but none of the service revenues. That being said, I honestly don't see how they could be excited to get into the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) game right now, either. MVNOs like Amp'd Mobile, Helio, and the now defunct ESPN Mobile haven't exactly been rousing successes in the US cellular market, and Apple's own .Mac Internet service ain't no great shakes, either. While it's certainly possible that I have no idea what I'm talking about (woulnd't be the first time) and Apple's on the verge of somehow rolling out the world's first ultra-profitable MVNO, I don't think that's the route for them to take. Writing about Macs has taught me that Apple fans are about as loyal and enthusiastic a bunch as you'll find anywhere or assembled behind any cause. American author Henry David Thoreau once said, "If misery loves company, misery has company enough." If misery was a company, Apple would fit right in, in terms of its retail store unit's popular walk-in tech support division, the "Genius Bar." Thoreau also said, "Nature is full of genius... so that not a snowflake escapes its fashioning hand." In this particular instance, the snowflake in question was my 12" PowerBook G4 which was missing a flake (a key cap) and nature was the Genius at the Apple Store. Except nature in this instance was anything but full of genius, and in fact quite the opposite. With my 12" PowerBook G4 now just over two months old, at least, from when I took it into my possession-- it was a store display unit and the inventory sticker on the box was stamped October 2005, though its almost flawless condition suggests it wasn't on display for too long before I bought it --I managed to turn my Mac into a PC. I wasnˆt tremendously impressed with the OEM battery that came in my Pismo PowerBook. True, the ëBook was a year old when I got it, and the battery had evidently been cycled a lot (although the machine itself was in virtually flawless, as-new condition), and was offering only about one and a half hours of runtime by age two years, failing completely at the three-year mark.  Apple released new 13" MacBooks today upgraded with Intel Core 2 Duo processors. The new 13" MacBooks sport Core 2 Duo processors ranging from 1.83GHz to 2.0GHz, up to 1GB of standard RAM, 60-120GB hard drives, and 6x dual-layer SuperDrives with 2.0GHz models. Apple claims that the new models are up to 25% faster than previous editions.

Five years ago this month I took possession of my Pismo PowerBook. It was already a year old at the time, so itˆs now really six, but Iˆm personally marking the half-decade with it. I traded a barely-used G4 Cube for the year-old Pismo The Cube, which I had purchased five months earlier, was fast, quiet, and came with a great set of Apple Pro satellite speakers. At the time its 576 MB of RAM made it seem like I would be able turn off Virtual Memory forever. The Apple Pro Keyboard and optical mouse were spectacular looking, and the 20 GB hard drive provided lots of room.
However, what I didnˆt like about the Cube was that it was too big, or more precisely, the Cube CPU module itself was quite compact, albeit surprisingly heavy, but when combined with all the peripheral stuff it required, it was a lot bigger package than a PowerBook. It also had no battery, which meant that during power failures, which are not unheard of out here in the woods, it would be not be usable, and there was of course increased likelihood of data loss. Small Size, Not As Good Sound: Apple iPod shuffle (2G) Reviewed

So after last Friday's unboxing, I spent the weekend putting the new iPod Shuffle 1GB through it's paces, including a head-to-head (or ear-to-ear, if you will) comparison with my 512MB first-generation shuffle. The long and short of it? I like the way the new shuffle looks, but the old shuffle sounds better. Also, the old one is more functional, given its standard USB connector. At $79 for 1GB, the new shuffle isn't a bad buy on its own, but compared to either the $149 2GB nano or, better yet, the $149 4GB refurbished nano and $59 1GB refurbished first-gen shuffle, it's definitely a case of style over substance.
The new shuffle resembles a sawed-off nano with its brushed aluminum body and rounded edges. Undeniably sexy, the new shuffle feels great in the hand and drew oohs and aahs from everyone I showed it to over the weekend. While I've heard some complaints that the newest iPod is too small and prone to being easily misplaced, I think that's nonsense. In my view, a gadget is too small when its functionality is impaired by the physical constraints of its design - cell phones with too close for comfort keypads come immediately to mind. Seeing as the shuffle was designed no screen and very few buttons, its size and overall form are near-perfect. If you're worried about losing something so small, get something bigger like the nano. I headed down to the Apple Store Bay Street in Emeryville, CA a little before 10 AM today to get my hands on the new second generation iPod shuffle. Why? So you could experience the thrill vicariously, of course. When I arrived at 9:55, there were about 10 or so people waiting for the store to open. Of course, when the doors actually opened it became clear that half of them were waiting for Genius Bar appointments. Of the six of us that lined up at the cash register, three more were there to pick up orders of other stuff.
