There was an interesting thread on MacInTouch running last week. An IT technician reported that a batch of 600 MHz iBooks used by faculty and administration at his school had suffered a 20 percent failure rate with their hard drives, nearly 20 percent failure on motherboards, and a nearly 100 percent battery failure after three years. On the other hand, the Dell Latitude D600 laptops at the same school had manifested no failures in two years. But also last week, PC World magazine reported the results of its eleventh annual Reliability & Service Survey, and as usual, Apple machines scored top "Better Than Average" ratings across the board, both in in desktops and laptops. 2004 has been the year of the iPod for Apple, bar none. Forget the PowerMac and iMac G5s - kids will be sent to college off the profits made from iPod Cases for Heaven's sake. Brearley, a private school for girls in New York, is now requiring their middle and high school students to purchase iPods for use in school. Playboy magazine just launched a downloadable softcore porn offering for iPod Photo called ... wait for it, now ... iBod. iBod, get it? Sure, I bought a new iBook back in June and I now get to use a new iMac G5 at work. Sure everyone's fingers are crossed in hopes that the 2" thin iMac was really just an engineering exercise to warm up Apple's industrial designers for churning out a PowerBook G5 that's the thinnest Mac ever and also won't overheat and explode a la the PowerBook 5300 series of yore. And, yes, some of us media cranks are even secretly praying to Woz himself that Apple finally sees fit to make a laptop (nay a desktop peripheral) with two mouse buttons. Will There Be New PowerBooks At Macworld, And Will They Be G5s?

Now that we're halfway through December and heading into Christmas Week with no PowerBook upgrades this fall, it's looking extremely likely that there will be a big announcement that Macworld Expo next month. We're overdue. The last major PowerBook introduction was way back in September, 2003, with the 15-inch Aluminum PowerBook was rolled out that Macworld Expo Paris, at which time the 12 inch and 17-inch PowerBooks received their first speed bump. The entire line was speed bumped to be present 1.33 and 1.5 GHz configurations last April. In the normal scheme of things, we could have expected another speed bump in October or November, which the G4 iBooks got but the PowerBooks didn't, which strongly indicates that Apple is not planning to carry on very far into the new year without major revisions worthy of a trade show announcement.
