2005 was a good year in the Apple laptop orbit, not really a vintage year (except for the fact that the hardware was all getting pretty long in the tooth), but the very good year nevertheless. Looking ahead to 2006, one thing we can be certain of is that it's going to be a watershed year. The vintage part will depend upon how solidly engineered and built the new MacIntel machines turn out to be.
After a bit of a shock when no iBook or PowerBook new product announcements were made that Macworld Expo in January § 2005 started out strong two weeks later with a major refreshments of the entire PowerBook line, with modest speed bumps, some feature enhancements, and a couple of completely new wrinkles -- a scrolling trackpad and a hard drive Sudden Motion Sensor. Handing Off My WallStreet - A Retrospective

After seven years of mostly faithful service, I'm finally handing off by wonderful old G3 Series WallStreet PowerBook.
For the past two years and a bit, my wife's computer has been a 117 MHz PowerBook 1400 that we got for my daughter when she headed off to university in 2002. It was soon replaced by a 133 MHz 1400 (which a year ago was in turn replaced by a 1.2 GHz iBook), so my wife inherited it as an upgrade from the old Desktop LC 520 she had been using.
Her computering is mostly email, word processing, and a bit of Web surfing, and the old 1400 with just 40 MB or RAM was fairly adequate for a time. However, the crunch came when she had to change email services, and the new one wouldn't work with Eudora 5.2. It did work with Eudora 6.1, but that version requires at least OS 9, and she had been running OS 8.6, which is the optimum tradeoff between features and speed for the 1400. We did have OS 9 installed on another hard drive partition, but the poor, old 1400 § a slug at the best of times, bogged down almost to the point of unusability under the newer system. An impasse, as my wife is used to Eudora, and was disinclined to experiment with other email software. It was time for her to have a system upgrade. Read More...

ZNet blogger Paul Murphy thinks Apple may be fixing to release another round of PowerPC laptops. In an op-ed entitled "Apple rumours and realities", Murphy says the appearance of Intel based Powerbooks from Apple this January isn't going to happen, although we may see both Intel-based Mac mini and/or Intel-based iBooks. "Beyond that, says Murphy, "Intel is just not going to happen for Apple next year -- no Powerbooks, no iMacs, no Workstations, and no X-Serves."
Murphy reasons that in the short term, costs will be higher then expected, CPU availability limited, "and the opportunity to realize performance gains on professional level gear depends more on bad software than good hardware, while " longer term prospects are clouded because Intel is failing to deliver on its pricing, volume, and performance promises."
Murphy outlines a compelling case for getting MacIntel iBooks out early, but probably with relatively low-power and inexpensive Intel processors. Read More...

A little over a year and a half ago, I had the good fortune to review the Future Sonics EM-3 EARS earphones for this website. At the time I called the EARS, "The most comfortable, best sounding earbud-style phones I've ever tried." 18 months or so later I've gotten to play with a few more pairs of $100+ earphones, including the Etymotic Research ER-6i and Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 Pro (review forthcoming). Experience has taught me two main things about fancy earphones: 1) The difference between a $10 pair of earbuds and a $50 pair is huge, the difference between a $50 pair and a $150 pair is huge, and beyond that the differences are less noticeable to all but the most discerning listeners, and; 2) Beauty is in the ear of the beholder. To wit: I still love the EARS, but the ER-6i's are better for the gym and airplane rides. I've only had the 5 Pro's for a few weeks, but they're some seriously great-sounding phones -- the question is, are they worth the extra $100 as compared to the other two I mentioned? Read More...

What's The Minimum 'Book For Acceptable Performance With Tiger?

How much of a 'Book do you need to run OS X 10.4 Tiger with acceptable performance? The specification threshold separating front-line workhorse performance from low-end compromise is a moving target, and somewhat variable depending on the type of use and user-tolerance for sluggish response. OS X 10.4 Tiger has redefined the equation again with its higher video processing demands, and I'm becoming increasingly convinced that my nearly three-year-old 700 MHz iBook with 640 megabytes of RAM and 16 megabytes of video RAM is now well short of the mark.
Don't get me wrong. I've had great service from this machine, and it's never missed a beat in 35 months plus, which is the longest I've ever gone without upgrading to a new system since I started using Macs, and which consequently speaks very well of it. The little 12.1-inch display is still bright and crisp and sharp, and a pleasure to work with. The 20 gigabyte IBM hard drive is too small, but it remains almost silent in operation, and I still find the iBook's styling attractive. Read More...
