As the holiday season winds down, with Christmas four days old, and the New Year just about 48 hours away, remember how it was when you were younger? It was all about the magic of the holiday season. No matter what people said, you believed in the jolly old man in the big red suit. Just because you couldn't see him, it didn't mean he wasn't real. The debate continues once again in a different form, and an argument which has gone on for the past year-and-a-half or so has come center stage in regard to everyone's favorite red-colored fruit (Apple), just as the holidays wind down for 2006, and the "halo"-days get into full gear for 2007. The week after Black Friday, reports surfaced on two fronts in regard to Apple Computer. First, that Mac and iPod sales were at an all-time record high, and second, that those sales were a direct result of the iPod mystique-- the so-called "iPod halo effect." Read More...

Itˆs always an interesting exercise trying to figure out what Apple might do to make the next generation of Mac notebooks better. More speed is always part of the quest, and probably highest on my wish list of priorities would be finding a way to make the critters run cooler. Intelˆs ¶Robson¾ Hybrid NAND/flash hard drive technology, rumored as being on the slate for Appleˆs next generation of MacBook Pros, would positively address both of those issues. ¶Robson,¾ which Intel first previewed in October, 2005, is the development code name for an integrated module that incorporates NAND flash memory as a ësmart storageˆ buffer between system RAM and the hard drive. The Robson memory storage subsystem plugs the performance gap between processor and HDD by acting as new layer of cache in the system memory/storage hierarchy. One might analogize it as a level 2 cache on steroids, and the performance boost Robson promises to offer could be as dramatic as the one when Motorola and IBM added a big L2 cache to what was basically a Power PC 603 chip back in 1997 and created the G3. The quiet corner of Nova Scotia, where I live, got hit with the first major power blackout of the winter (actually still late fall) season on Monday, caused by what seemed to be an unremarkable four-inch snowfall. But is was heavy, wet snow that collected on tree limbs and took out wires, so we were without power for about 18 hours. Weˆre reasonably well fixed for such exigencies. We heat primarily with wood, and both of our stoves are electricity-independent. We also have gravity-fed water from an artesian spring, so we can wash, the toilets keep flushing, and weˆre warm, able to cook food, and to heat water on the wood stove. And as long as the phone lines arenˆt affected by an outage, we can still get on the Internet, which is one reason among many that I would no longer seriously consider a desktop computer of any sort as a workhorse machine. Yes, you can get a UPS, but thatˆs encumbrance and expense, for a solution thatˆs not nearly as slick as the automatic and effortless transition to battery power with a portable computer. Apple's computers--not just iPods anymore--are back at Best Buy and Circuit City after a "here today, gone tomorrow" relationship since the turn of the century. Whether this current partnership will last this time is unknown, but its timing comes only days after reports [see related article] that Macs (and iPods) are selling at an alarming rate, with sales and shares of Apple approaching all-time record highs. In a move that seems to signal the "second coming" of the Mac-maker, Apple is once again selling its computer products at the nation's top two major electronics retail chains to increase its presence with and availability to consumers.
