If no new Apple subnotebook materializes at Macworld Expo, there are going to be an awful lot of surprised, disappointed, and frustrated small ëBook fans. Now more than 18 months since the 12¾ PowerBook was discontinued, pent-up demand for a replacement Apple subnotebook is reaching a sort of critical mass. Of course this has happened before. Apple pulled the plug on the PowerBook 2400c in 1998 and didnˆt get around to replacing it until either May, 2001 or January, 2003 depending on whether you consider the 12¾ dual USB iBook an acceptable successor or held out for the 12¾ aluminum PowerBook. Either way, it makes 18 months a relatively short dry spell by comparison. However, Iˆm not inclined to imagine that it will take three or four years this time around. For one thing, Apple is a lot more interested in miniaturized computing platforms than it used to be what with the iPhone and iPod touch revolution. The recent aluminum iMac has a more than subtle iPhonish theme, and one can safely anticipate that a subnotebook will carry this trend substantially farther. Read More...

Itˆs fascinating, and more than a bit ironic, that nearly eight years after it was unveiled at Macworld Expo Tokyo in 2000, the PowerBook G3 (FireWire), aka ¶Pismo,¾ now entering the ¶Winter¾ of its service life arc, is arguably more popular than it was during itˆs relatively short nine-month production run ¶Spring.¾ Of course by ¶popular¾ I donˆt mean numerically. As admirably tough and resilient as the Pismo is, attrition has to be taking its toll. Eight years is a very long time in computer terms, and portable computers tend to live a lard life. Maybe I should use ¶appreciated¾ instead of ¶popular,¾ but judging from the volume of ¶Pismo mail¾ I get from readers, there are still an awful lot of Pismos out there in active service with enthusiastic users. I have to say Iˆm disappointed that Leopard is not more compelling. There are many cool and interesting things about it, for example Time Machine, Spaces, and Cover Flow, which are all solid and useful enhancements, but then there is the other stuff, like crippling Leopardˆs ability to support normal, hierarchical folders in the Dock (which was one of the few things I liked about the Dock) in favor of the brain-dead ¶Stacks: feature, and the general bugginess and crankiness if the OS, at least in my experience so far.
