What does your order say specifically? If you've ordered one of the new MacBooks, we'd like to hear from you. Which reseller? When is your anticipated shipping date? Has it already shipped? Send your information here, and we'll post it anonymously. Check back daily for a list of fresh shipping reports. Here are today's reports:

"Ordered Macbook Pro 1.67 GHz minutes after the announcement at Educational Store. Ship date was Feb. 15. Automatically upgraded to 1.83 GHz on Feb. 14 and ship date postponed to Feb. 28. Checked today and it was shipped on Feb. 22 and is scheduled for delivery Feb. 27!"

"I ordered a 1.83GHz (now 2.0GHz) model CTO (7200RPM HD) from a local Mac only reseller in Portland, OR on Jan 21st. The salesman told me that CTO's would arrive first because they would come direct from Apple. Expected arrival Feb. 23rd. I called the store on the 24th (I hadn't heard from them) and asked for status. Now the Salesman tells me that ALL the MacBook Pro's will be coming through their distributer. Their distributer says they will be getting a first "partial" shipment from Apple around the March 1st and that they "anticipate" store delivery in Oregon around March 8th. The distributer also had NO CLUE as to whether CTO's would even be included! To say the least, I'm more then mildly upset. Why does Apple treat their distribution chain so poorly? A few years ago, I purchased a PowerMac G4 from the same retailer and that order was shipped directly from Apple to the store in just a few days."

"I ordered my 1.83 MBP on January 19 with the 7,200rpm version of the hard drive being the only modification. Apple subsequently automatically upgraded the order to the 2.0 MBP and then I notified Apple that I'd take them up on the 2.16 upgrade. I'm happy to report that the machine was delivered to me today, February 24 (in Vancouver, Canada), AHEAD of the date I was originally given for shipment, namely February 28. And she's a beaut'!"

RIP "PowerBook." MacBook Pros are now shipping, and the Apple Store in downtown San Francisco has a few tables' worth of the Intel-powered laptops on display. I was there last night and checked them out for awhile ... and, well, they look, feel, and function alot like PowerBook G4s. The staff at the store was suprisingly -- but logically -- low-key about pushing the new technology, reminding me that "the PowerBook G4 is far from obsolete" when I inquired about upgrade paths. "I just ordered a MacBook Pro on February 13th. It says on my tracking order it will take 2-4 weeks. I have seen the status and become aware that they made some upgrades on the system. "I just got off the phone with the Apple store, trying to figure out why in the same email they say they are shipping MBPs this week, then say they aren't shipping until the 28th. I actually got a little heated when the person on the phone told me that the email (and the press release on the website) couldn't possibly exist and that I must have read it incorrectly. After a 15 minute wait to speak with management, I got the same line. They said that all orders had been pushed back and that it happened after they sent the emails out. When I called them on the fact that the email they sent contained "Today we announced that this week Apple will begin shipping the new 15.4-inch MacBook Pro" and "We anticipate shipping your upgraded order by February 28, 2006" I was met with icy silence, followed by a repeat of "everyone has to wait." I don't have an issue waiting, I just wanted to know if there was a chance they could ship early. What I do have an issue with is being told that I can't read and that I am lying about what I am reading by the basic call center staff and the management. I have half a mind to cancel my order now."

Apple very quietly announced Tuesday that the first MacBook Pros are now shipping, and they're shipping with faster processors than originally announced at MacWorld. Anyone who ordered a 1.67GHz machine is getting a 1.83GHz, and 1.83GHz MBPs have been bumped to 2GHz -- at no additional cost. A 2.16GHz machine is now available as a BTO from the Apple Store (with shorter wait times than the other models, incidentally).

Why the sudden, free speed bump? My money says this is what Apple had planned all along but they were so concerned over Intel supply constraints a month ago that they announced the slower-chipped machines at MacWorld just to be safe. Macs have manifold virtues, but with rare exceptions ease of access to their internal workings has not traditionally been one of them. Occasionally Macs have shone in this regard; notable examples of easy-to-work-on-Macs being the Power Mac G3 and G4 "drawbridge" tower models, and the old Color Classic and 500 series AIO machines with their pull-out logic boards in a drawer.

However, there has never been in Apple laptop that could be characterized as easy to work on. The G3 Series and 1400 PowerBooks are about the best, but even they are a challenge if you need to dig any deeper than the stuff that can be accessed directly beneath the removable keyboards. Read More...

Apple stated today that all MacBook Pros will be shipping with faster processors that originally stated. The 1.67GHz MacBook Pro will be automatically upgraded to 1.83GHz, while the 1.83GHz MacBook Pro will be automatically upgraded to 2.0GHz. Prices and other configurations remain the same. The following is from Apple's press release:

"Apple this week will begin shipping the new 15-inch MacBookç Pro notebook computer featuring the new Intel Core Duo processor which delivers up to four times the performance of the PowerBookÍ G4*, a built-in iSightç video camera for video conferencing on-the-go and the breakthrough Front Row media experience with Apple Remote. All models of the new MacBook Pro will ship with faster Intel Core Duo processors than previously announced, delivering even greater performance at no additional cost. The $2,499 model now includes a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from the previously announced 1.83 GHz, and will begin shipping this week. The $1,999 model now includes a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from the previously announced 1.67 GHz, and will begin shipping next week. In addition, customers may now upgrade to a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor as a build-to-order option at The Apple Store."

One of the coolest pieces of software I saw at MacWorld last month was Softcahos' Webstractor. Webstractor is sort of a combination uber-web browser/rich text editor that allows you to easily capture web pages, strip out the stuff you don't need (ads, background graphics, etc), and turn the actual information into research notes that are easy to cite & create bibliographies for. The app does a great job of managing your browsing history in a way that makes it easy to backtrack your steps, and it's smart enough to automatically check for newly updated information online and do a whole host of other things. The Waterfield Large Cargo laptop case from San Francisco designs is indeed the biggest laptop case I've ever reviewed, but that's not nearly the most impressive thing about it. Even on first impression, one is immediately aware that this is an extraordinary product, as indeed it should be for the price.

We aren't quite into Gucci territory here, although the quality may be as good, but Waterfield computer bags are definitely positioned at the high end of the market. As the company forthrightly affirms, "Waterfield bags are designed and made in San Francisco, where the rent is high, labor expensive, and competition is intense. We wouldn't go anywhere else." New Macs Announced? Now's the Time to Crossgrade

The thing about bleeding edge technology is how the new new thing has a tendency to make the old new thing suddenly affordable. Now that the first MacBook Pros are about to ship, and the rumor mill is churning about an Intel-based iBook upgrade ("MacBook" ?) coming in the next few months, I'm looking at my iBook G4 and wondering from a purely economic point of view: Is now the time to "crossgrade" to a PowerBook G4?

I bought my iBook G4/1Ghz about 20 months ago now from the Apple Store in lower Manhattan, New York. At the time I owned a Titanium PowerBook and Apple had just speed bumped the iBook line, so for about $1,000 I got a new machine with a G4 processor twice as fast as my TiBook, not to mention a brand new warranty. The TiBook was still in vogue then so I got a pretty decent price for it (bundled with all of my accessories) from a graphic designer who just had to have a TiBook. Things worked out pretty well for everyone: She got the titanium she wanted, I got a faster machine with a bigger hard drive and some warranty-induced peace of mind as I packed up my belongings to move across the country. Word on the street is an Intel Mac is a moddable Mac. According to Japanese journal Boot, someone's already ripped the processor out of a 1.83Ghz Core Duo iMac and replaced it with a 2Ghz Core Duo chip. And it worked just fine. Since Core Duos (and Intel chips in general) are more readily available in the aftermarket than PPC chips were, could this spell a new Golden Age of Mac Modifications? Let's hope so ... So, what'll it be for your next system upgrade? I can't supply any conclusive recommendation. I'm on the horns of the same dilemma myself, and haven't yet made up my mind. Catch the first MacIntel wave, or get one more known-quantity G4 'Book as a transitional era spanner? There's a case to be made for doing either, and which alternative is best for you will depend on many variables, such as your needs, tastes, and budgetary circumstances.

Personally, I'm a low-ender by temperament. Not that I have any objection to high-end features and performance. My Pismo PowerBook was the top of the line when it was built in October, 2000, but I bought it for a low-end price a year later, and it has proved an excellent value for the money. I'm dictating this column on it right now. However, buying a higher-end machine means you are going to get hammered a lot worse by depreciation, and I absolutely hate depreciation. One reason I've owned more than 50 used cars over the past 39 years. Read More...
