We're still three plus months away from mere civilians getting to touch the thing, but the buzz surrounding Apple's forthcoming cellular telephone only continues to grow. Personally, I'm biding my time playing with Motorola's unlocked, Linux-powered, touchscreen music phone, the MOTOROKR E6. Other folks are amusing themselves by dissecting every bit of available media surrounding the iPhone, including this "Hidden Details of the iPhone Keynote" video from Actioncorps. This documentary-style video is ... well, it's the kind of seriously-narrated, conspiracy-theorist "journalism" that makes Apple marketing folk say, "That's weird. Logitech's Z-10 Interactive Speaker System comes with two distinct parts: The Interactive part and the Speaker part. The Interactive part is silly. The Speaker part is fabulous. While you can't get them separately, together they comprise just about the best powered speaker system I've ever heard that neither includes a subwoofer nor costs more than $150. Unless you're a hardcore gamer or basshead who needs floor-shaking, roof-rattling subsonics in your life, the Z-10s are well worth a look as an excellent mix of value, audio quality, and style. And thanks to the work of a shareware developer, the Interactive part will work with your OS X Mac (Logitech's software only supports Windows boxes) though honestly I'm still not sure what the appeal is there. The next addition to Apple’s portable family should without question be a subcompact MacBook Pro. I’m sure Apple is losing sales to users who liked the 12-inch PowerBook, but find the 13-inch MacBook too big and heavy, and/or too compromised with its GMA 950 “vampire video” graphics support. These folks have a number of attractive alternatives on the Windows PC side. An interesting new one is the new ASUS U1F Subnotebook that I profiled here last week, which comes with a lacquered “piano finish” and real hide leather palm rests, and weighs a barely there 2.2 pounds.
However, once the subnotebook void has been filled with a new baby MacBook Pro, the last element still missing from the market spectrum that Apple had covered during the aluminum PowerBook/dual USB iBook era is a standard-sized consumer notebook - a replacement for the erstwhile 14-inch iBook.
