From time to time, Apple portable oriented Websites have run surveys asking readers to suggest ideas for features and enhancements they would like to see in upcoming PowerBooks and iBook. The PowerBook Zone posted the results of one of these surveys last week. However, I'm surprised that the matter of ruggedness, at least specifically, rarely gets mentioned.
I confess to liking certain PC laptops. One that appeals to me aesthetically Acer's series of Ferrari-styled notebooks. Another PC laptop family that I've long admired vicariously is Panasonic's ToughBooks. Rather than taking an all things to all people approach, Panasonic has focused in the niche market for "ruggedized" laptops, and done rather well at it. My neighbor has a ToughBook, and is very pleased with it. Read More...

Last week in this space I reviewed the Konica/Minolta Dimage 5400 Elite Film Scanner, which I've been using with my PowerBook to scan my 35 year collection of 35mm transparencies and negatives into digital format. Dedicated film scanners like the 5400 Elite are wonderful tools that do a superb job with supported film formats, but they are expensive, and can't scan photographic prints and other hard copy materials, which limits their versatility. For the average photographic hobbyist or even advanced amateur photographer, a flatbed scanner than can scan both film and hard copy may be a better choice.

Digital photography has revolutionized the way we take pictures. I still love my faithful old Olympus OM-1 35 millimeter single lens reflex rig, but these days I do most of my photography with a couple of digital cameras. The cost of film and photofinishing has become so astronomical that you don't have to shoot and process a whole lot of rolls before you've equalled the purchase price of a decent digital camera, and of course you get the photos as quickly as you can download them to the Mac.
However, a lot of us who have been shutterbugs since long before digital photography was developed have large collections of film photographs § slides, negatives and prints. I have somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 slides archived, and although my trusty old GAF slide projector that I bought used for $50 back in 1974 still works, the ability to digitalize the photos opens up a whole new dimension. Some people like the hi-tech aesthetic. I used to work for a small consulting company that crammed more Mac-related gear into our tiny two-room office than you could imagine. My "desk" was a wall-sized cage of wire-shelving that held two Power Mac towers, two monitors, a full-on Media 100 video editing system (this was ten years ago, pre-Firewire and MiniDV), and a host of other peripherals, external hard drives, and surge protectors. The capacity to operate under battery power is both the raison d'etre and the Achilles' heel of portable computers. In theory, battery powered computing is wonderful. You can slip the surly bonds of cords and wires, and compute freely wherever you please, and with Airport even surf the Internet or network if you're in range of a base station.
In most aspects, Apple laptop technology has advanced by quantum leaps in the past ten years. In March, 1995, state of the art was the PowerBook 540c, with a 33 MHz 68LC040 processor, a whopping great 320 MB hard drive, maximum 36 MB of RAM, a 9" 640x480 LCD display, and a Nickel Metal Hydride "Intelligent" battery that would give you perhaps 2 - 2 1/2 hours of real-world running time § or double that with an optional second battery aboard.
Today, for a lot less money than that 540c sold for, the high-end PowerBook has a 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4 processor, a 100 GB hard drive, can support 2 GB of RAM, has a 17" 1440x900 display, and, ta-da: a Lithium Ion (LiIon) battery that gives you up to 4.5 hours running time § or roughly the same as the old 540c with it's two batteries did. Obviously, while just about every other major aspect of PowerBook performace is light years ahead of the status quo in 1995, battery life has been essentially treading water.

The Apple Store has several build-to-order (BTO) options available with new PowerBook G4s. With these options, you can configure the size of the hard drive, the type of optical drive, and the amount of included memory:
- 17" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 80GB hard drive (-$100), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), Combo Drive (-$150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), SuperDrive ($150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 12" 1.5GHz PowerBooks: 100GB 5400rpm HD ($150), Up to 1.256GB RAM ($425)
With these options, the wait at The Apple Store increases to 4-6 business days. Note that some of the options will actually reduce the price of the PowerBook. For instance, choosing an 80GB hard drive, as opposed to the standard 100GB hard drive, will lower the price of the 17" PowerBook by $100 to $2594. Not a bad deal if you don't need all that space. Choosing a Combo Drive with the 15" 1.67GHz model lowers the price by $150 to $2149.

The G5 PowerBook didn't materialize with the latest round of PowerBook updates, and while some are predicting that we may see one rolled out at the Worldwide Developer's Conference in June, I'm still highly skeptical. Indeed, given the compromises necessary to even get the G5 to work in the G5 iMac, my perspective on the prospects for a G5 PowerBook remains "show me."
