This is great fun. I'm thoroughly enjoying my new (refurbished) 17" PowerBook, and so far the speed is what I'm enjoying most. While 1.33 GHz is a relatively ho-hum in the contemporary context, it's a big jump from the 700 MHz G3 iBook and 550 MHz G4 Pismo PowerBook I had been using for production, and at the gut level it represents the most dramatic increase in performance I've experienced in a computer system upgrade since I migrated from a 100 MHz 603e PowerBook 5300 to a 233 MHz G3 Series WallStreet PowerBook seven years ago. Things like to Finder response, screen redraws, document/application opening, speech recognition response, and the Classic Mode start-up are what I've noticed most. A lot of things that suffered hesitation or lag on the older 'Books happen RIGHT NOW with the BigAl. Read More...

If you were here two weeks ago, then you know that I've just purchased a refurbished 1.33 GHz 17" PowerBook from TechRestore. The Big Al has arrived, and it is an awesome machine § no longer cutting edge, but a quantum leap forward in performance from my 700 MHz G3 iBook and 550 MHz G4 Pismo PowerBook.

Thus far I am completely delighted with my new-to-me computer, and indeed it looks and feels like a brand-new PowerBook. It's an Apple Certified Refurbished unit, and came beautifully packaged in proper Apple shipping packing just like a new computer would have, complete with a gaggle of cables, connectors and adapters, the skimpy but better than nothing Apple owners' manual, Software restore disks (OS 10.3.3) plus an OS X 10.4 Tiger upgrade DVD.

The PowerBook itself is in pristine condition, with no scratches, dents, scuffs or evidence of wear and tear. If it was used previously, it can't have been for long. Read More...

I saw the iWasCoding booth at MacWorld last month and had to check out version 2 of GarageSale, their application for making eBay selling easier for OS X users. I'm an admitted eBay-aholic, and while I'm more of a buyer than a seller, I have made a chunk of pocket change selling goodies on the bay over the years. I've finally made my system upgrade move -- ordering a refurbished 17-inch 1.33 GHz PowerBook from TechRestore in Concord, California. I had flirted with the idea of making the big leap to a MacBook Pro, but a constellation of factors and issues ultimately persuaded me that one more Power PC 'Book really was the sensible choice at this time. At least for me.

The clinchers are backwards compatibility and performance running my library of Power PC native applications, and Classic Mode support. It will be years before I'm completely switched over to Universal Binary or Intel-native software, and in the meantime, Rosetta emulation doesn't sound all that scintillating. Various benchmarks that I've scanned put it at maybe 70 percent of what you would get from a 1.5 GHz or 1.67 GHz PowerBook, or at the level of a 1.25 GHz G4 'Book, so the 1.33 GHz Big Al should give me about the same real-world punch, or probably a little better, than I would get running my legacy software on a MacBook Pro, for substantially less money. First off, Apple introduced the new Intel-based Mac mini with Front Row software and an IR remote. What's disappointing is that there's no "TiVO Killer" DVR functionality involved. The new mini does feature VGA/DVI video out and both analog and digital (S/PDIF) audio out, but it's not quite a full-fledged media center.

What's interesting is that the new mini is available today in both Intel Core Solo ($599) and Intel Core Duo ($799) processor configurations. The new iTunes "Share Music" feature is also nifty - built-in Bonjour technology allows devices to find themselves and share music over a network (as in iTunes sharing). The technology also allows for shared video content streamed from another computer (mac or windows) on your network. Hence the gigabit Ethernet port newly introduced to the mini. Read More...
