Last week we told you about a school in the San Francisco Bay Area that was using Apple technology to connect with students, enabling them to stay in school while not physically being there. By coincidence, on the same day that TV news story aired, Intel announced in a press release that, "...Intel-powered classmate PCs are shipping in volume to emerging markets." This must be laptop stand week on PBCentral, since Noah Kravitz posted a review of the Griffin Elevator Notebook Stand yesterday. Actually, itˆs pure coincidence, but an interesting juxtaposition of products with Pfeffer Industriesˆ "The Laptop Stand" that is the subject of this review.

Clear polished acrylic plastic does a remarkable job of synthesizing the look of crystal, albeit without the weight, the tactile feel or the characteristic ringing note when a piece of fine crystal is tapped - not to mention the price. Acrylic is also vastly more strong and versatile than crystal, and can be employed for utilitarian functions that would not be practical with glass, such as laptop stands. Read More...

If you donˆt have the budget or inclination to pop for a new MacBook Pro or MacBook right now, and you have a PowerBook G3 WallStreet, Lombard, or Pismo, or one of the Titanium PowerBooks, or a 12¾, 15¾ or 17ˆ aluminum G4 PowerBook, a possible solution is to squeeze a year or two more useful service from your old ëBook by installing a faster processor upgrade - the widest variety of the latter being offered for the PowerBook 2000 Pismo. Thus far, no processor upgrades have been developed for the MacIntel Apple notebooks. Even the 1.83 GHz Core Duo models have plenty of grunt to keep most users satisfied for now. Last week, Dave Woodward over at startusup.com posted a blog entitled ¾Why You should buy a MacBook Pro,¾ arguing that the professional Apple ëBooks justify their higher cost with substantively better value. ¶Upon trivial inspection,¾ Dave observes, ¶one might surmise the only change the addition of the word ¶Pro¾ to the fine market-ese that is the word ¶MacBook¾ (bless you), is a change of material (MacBook == plastic, MacBook Pro = metal) and a slightly larger screen. However the differences are far greater once a person decides to look under the hood, kick the tires, and other automotive metaphors.¾ For one thing, Dave notes, ¶the MacBook Pro has 100% more L2 Cache on faster processors from the base MacBook.
