"Fry's in Sunnyvale, CA (and presumably other locations) has the old 15" 1.25 GHz Aluminum Powerbook w/ 80GB HD and SuperDrive for $2179 which beats even Amazon after rebate. And, I was able to negotiate the Fry's salesman down to $2100 when a friend at Apple called to tell me they have the Friends and Family discount on the new models which puts the 1.5 GHz, 80 GB HD & SuperDrive model at $2125 so I'm going with that instead."

Apple today released updated iBooks with G4 processors ranging from 1GHz to 1.2GHz. Model configurations and pricing remains the same, with one 12" iBook and two 14" iBooks. Other additions include a faster 4x DVD SuperDrive option on the high-end 14" 1.2GHz model, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics with 32MB DDR video memory, plus a maximum memory ceiling of 1.2GB. My PowerBook has been acting funny again and I can't make it stop. I think it's some kind of permissions problem because various applications seem to be having trouble accessing and writing to system-level files: All of the emails in one of my Inboxes disappeared and yet the Inbox file itself seems to be intact; I can't retrieve any of my Address Book data; the music program Live gives me a "can't write to Undo file" error every time I quit. Norton System Works repaired a bunch of problems but couldn't solve this one, and I couldn't find any cures online (if any of you have ideas, please email them my way). I had an appointment last week after work not too far from the Apple Store Soho, so I brought my laptop with me in case I had time to stop by. Apple this morning released updated eMacs. The new models come with 1.25GHz G4 processors, 256MB DDR333 SDRAM, ATI Radeon 9200 graphics with 32MB DDR video memory, and three USB 2.0 ports. The high-end model also sports an 80GB hard drive. The model line still consists of two models -- an eMac/Combo for $799, and an eMac/SuperDrive for $999 (a $100 price reduction).

The wait for build-to-order PowerBooks and iBooks at The Apple Store increased today from 'Same Day' delivery to 5-7 days. A month or so ago I reviewed Belkin's TuneCase wireless FM trasmitter for iPod. A wireless FM transmitter plugs into the iPod's headphone jack and broadcasts the audio signal over a chosen FM frequency so you can enjoy the music (or whatever you listen to) through a nearby radio. Transmitters like this are a great idea if you want to listen to your iPod in the car -- while many new stereos have input jacks or CD players that can read .mp3 files, there's nothing quite so nice as being able to queue up your favorite iTunes playlists for the drive home from work. The Apple Store has factory-refurbished iBook G4s available in their Special Deals section today. They have the 14" 1GHz iBook/G4 available for $1299 and the 12" 800MHz iBook/G4 available for $949. Those represent a $200 and $150 savings, respectively, over new models. Each model comes with a standard Apple one-year warranty.

It's likely that Apple can't help you with older models anyway. This is only a partial list -- the places mentioned most often on our forums. Your local Mac shop is probably a good resource, too.

If you're in the market for a 1.25GHz model, you can save $200 by choosing a Combo Drive instead of the standard SuperDrive (no DVD-R). That drops the price to $2399. An 80GB hard drive more than you'd ever need? Replace the 80GB drive with a 60GB model for a $75 savings. That drops the price to $2324. As configured, The Apple Store reports a 1-3 day wait. Total savings? $275.
