An iBook Update Should Be Imminent, But Widescreens Coming In The Fall?

Some rumoristas had been predicting new iBook and eMac updates for this week, but so far nada, and I'm doubtful that Apple would want to release new hardware in the same week that Tiger is scheduled to pounce. Amazon has evidently spilled the beans about a long-overdue PowerMac speed bump to 2.7 GHz, but I don't anticipate an official announcement until next week earliest. Ditto for an iBook update, which is due (The iBook line was last refreshed in October 2004), but not really overdue by historical precedent. An iBook update has been traditional in April/May for the past four years.
I have no insider knowledge, but here's what I think is likely, based on deduction and what's been reported recently in the Taiwanese IT trade press (more on that in a moment), Read More...

- 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), Combo Drive (-$150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850), 128MB VRAM ($100)

Mail-in rebate forms can be found on each product's specification page or on the price trackers at macprices.net. To qualify for the rebate, you must purchase the iBook from Amazon.com -- not one of their partners (Office Depot, etc.). Including the rebates, prices are as follows:

$100 rebate:

PowerBook build-to-order options; save $150 on some configurations

The Apple Store has several build-to-order (BTO) options available with new PowerBook G4s. With these options, you can configure the size of the hard drive, the type of optical drive, and the amount of included memory:
- 17" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 80GB hard drive (-$100), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), Combo Drive (-$150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850), 128MB VRAM ($100)
- 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), SuperDrive ($150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 12" 1.5GHz PowerBooks: 100GB 5400rpm HD ($150), Up to 1.256GB RAM ($425)
With these options, the wait at The Apple Store increases to 1-3 business days. Note that some of the options will actually reduce the price of the PowerBook. For instance, choosing an 80GB hard drive, as opposed to the standard 100GB hard drive, will lower the price of the 17" PowerBook by $100 to $2594. Not a bad deal if you don't need all that space. Choosing a Combo Drive with the 15" 1.67GHz model lowers the price by $150 to $2149.
