And then there was one. The little 12-inch machine looks kind of lonesome on the Apple store home page, the last of the G4 PowerBooks. Whoda' thought that the 12-incher, which last received a significant update in January, 2005, would be the last-ever Apple portable carrying the illustrious PowerBook name. For how much longer? Who knows? It now appears as if we won't be seeing the Intel-based 13.3" MacBook until probably June.
In the meantime, on Monday Apple unveiled the new 17" MacBook Pro, which replaces the 1.67 GHz 17" PowerBook G4, and removes any ambiguity as to which 'Book is king of the hill. Having to recently upgraded to an Apple Certified Refurbished 1.33 GHz 17" PowerBook, and quickly fallen in love with it, I was more than casually interested in how the anticipated 17" MacBook Pro would present. Apple today introduced the 17" MacBook Pro, a replacement for the 17" PowerBook, which has been discontinued. The 17" MacBook Pro has a standard 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo processor and is priced at $2799. It includes the following specifications:
- 17-inch widescreen display, 1680 x 1050 resolution
- 1GB (single SODIMM) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
- 120GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive
- 8x double-layer SuperDrive
- ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB GDDR3 memory
- One FireWire 400, one FireWire 800, and three USB 2.0 ports
The 17" MacBook Pro distinguishes itself from the 15" model by the inclusion of an 8x double-layer SuperDrive, a standard 120GB hard drive, and a FireWire 800 port. Other specifications remain the same as those found on the 15" MacBook Pro.

According to MacInTouch's major user survey of more than 10,000 readers, the original clamshell iBook is the most rugged and reliable Apple laptop of the G3/G4 period. As MacInTouch notes: "The single most reliable Apple laptop in our survey is the original Blueberry, Tangerine and Graphite series iBook, with a low 8-11% repair percentage." One of Apple's most distinctive industrial design efforts, the clamshell won many loyal fans, but does it still measure up that has a practically useful computer in the OS X 10.4 Tiger era, or is its day now past?
Through the late 1998 and early 1999, the rumor mills churned out speculation about a new, entry-level, "consumer" laptop in the works from Apple, a portable counterpart to the spectacularly successful desktop iMac. What I and many others had been anticipating was a compact, light laptop analogous to the contemporaneous three-pound Sony VAIO and a raft of other PC subnotebooks.
