Four days after I dropped it off, the Apple Store in Walnut Creek, CA called to tell me my MacBook was fixed and ready to be picked up. Great news. I drove out there with my wife and ran in to get it while she looked for a parking spot. I hadn't realized how annoyed I was at the whole experience until the kid who helped me at the front desk said, "It'll be down in a few minutes ... assuming they can find it up there." Ever since I heard Windows was working on its "next generation" release of its OS, then code-named Longhorn, I was--I have to admit--intrigued. That intrigue was lost the minute I opened up the PC-based review magazine (can't remember what it was called) that already compared it to the Mac OS. Right then and there, I thought "Longhorn" was the perfect code name for the new Windows OS. Thoughts of cows on the pasture, slowly moving along the farm land, wasting their time away munching on grass and calling out "moooooooooo." And if Microsoft intended the symbol to be not a cow, but a strong bull, they got it right. It's all a bunch of bull! And the thing of it is? Microsoft needs to "moooooooo"-ve on! Read More...

Six weeks ago, I posted a ëBook Mystique column entitled ¶Is The MacBook Pro Really A Better Value Than The MacBook?,¾ in which I concluded, albeit somewhat tentatively, that it is. My reasoning was that the MacBook Pro has a real Graphic Processor Unit (GPU) with 128 MB or 256MB of dedicated GDDR3 video RAM instead of the Macbookˆs Intel GMA950 ¶vampire video¾ that annexes up to 80 MB of system RAM for video support. The MacBook Pro has 100% more L2 Cache on faster processors than the base MacBook. While the clock-speed advantage of the MacBook Pro processors is not dramatically higher (2.33Ghz over the base MacBook at 1.83Ghz), the addition of that extra L2 Cache magnifies the difference, providing significantly better real-world performance that transcends nominal differences in clock speeds. The MacBook Pro supports up to 3 GB of RAM, while the MacBook maxes out at 2 MB (so that 80 MB lost to video support looms larger), and the MacBookˆs come with a smallish (by current standards) 13¾ screen with a modest resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, and you can get either a matte or glossy display with the MacBook Pros, while itˆs glossy-only with the MacBook. I was on my way home from covering the CTIA Wireless 2007 cellular industry trade show for a client when I finally decided it was time to buy a new computer. The idea to compile my digital photos and mpeg video clips into a short "vlog" (video blog) had been gaining steam in my mind ever since I spied two guys in giant BlackBerry suits shaking hands with show-goers on the trade floor. Exhausted from the trip but facing four more hours in Coach class, I pulled my 12" iBook G4 out from the overhead luggage bin, crammed it onto the seatback tray table, and fired up iMovie. One of the things I think PC makers often do better than Apple is building modularity into their systems. The modular concept isnˆt entirely foreign to Apple, and in the context of portables has been incorporated to a greater or lesser degree, with the PowerBook 1400 and PowerBook G3 Series WallStreet and Lombard representing a high water mark in accessibility to internals, and the polar opposite being the G3 and G4 iBooks (all of them) which are a nightmare to service, even for something as mundane as upgrading the hard drive, but user serviceability and upgradability has never been outstanding in any Apple notebook.
