Amazingly close to exactly four years ago, I wrote a couple of columns here covering the then spankin' new dual USB iBook. I was so enamoured with the promise of the machine during the Stevenote, that I promptly ran out and sold my relatively new Pismo in anticipation of getting my hands on Apple's new laptop. Four years have past, and in that time I've gone through three portable Macs, numerous Apple Messagepads, and a couple of desktop Macs. I've also managed to find a really great job as a technology coordinator in a higher- education department which is very mac-centric. Amazingly, I've actually managed to keep and often use that iBook through these 4 years for a whole number of amazing things. This week, I'd like to revisit my original thoughts recorded a week or so after I brought the iBook home. My goal? Hopefully something useful can be said here about the nature of our first impressions and the way in which a Macintosh can weather a few years in my backpack. Read More

The Pismo, properly known as the PowerBook G3 2000 FireWire, was a watershed model in the literal sense. It was the first Apple portable with built-in FireWire, and introduced the motherboard architecture that would be used in the first 1.5 generations of Titanium G4 PowerBooks. On the other hand, it was the last-ever G3 PowerBook (albeit upgradable to G4), the last Apple 'Book to facilitate processor upgrades by virtue of having its CPU mounted on a removable daughtercard, and the last to feature the convenience, versatility, and simple upgrading qualities of a removable device expansion bay. The Pismo shipped with a tray-loading CD/DVD-ROM drive in the expansion bay -- the first PowerBook to come with DVD support standard across the board.
For my own Pismo, I also have ZIP drive and Superdisk modules, the latter of which also reads and writes 1.4k floppies, although it is no longer supported in all aspects 10.3 Panther and presumably neither by 10.4 Tiger. Read More...

Apple is recalling and exchanging the batteries in 12" and 15" PowerBook G4s and 12" iBooks sold between October 2004 and May 2005:
"In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities, Apple is voluntarily recalling certain lithium ion rechargeable batteries that were sold worldwide from October 2004 through May 2005 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. These batteries were manufactured by LG Chem, Ltd. of South Korea. The affected batteries could overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Apple has received six consumer reports of these batteries overheating. If you have a recalled battery, please stop using it and order a replacement battery immediately. Once you have removed the battery, plug in the AC adapter to power the computer. If you must temporarily use your computer with the battery, do not leave it unattended and check for signs of overheating. Apple has initiated a worldwide exchange program and will provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge."

If you don't have the scratch to pony up for a new Macintosh -- even an eMac, a Mac mini, or an iBook, it's something of a buyers market out there these days in use Macs. With the aforementioned entry-level Macs all selling for less than one thousand dollars, one should certainly consider whether, say, a Mac mini with a used or scrounged monitor, keyboard, and mouse might not be a more suitable option. The Apple Store has several build-to-order (BTO) options available with new PowerBook G4s. With these options, you can configure the size of the hard drive, the type of optical drive, and the amount of included memory:
- 17" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 80GB hard drive (-$100), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), Combo Drive (-$150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850), 128MB VRAM ($100)
- 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), SuperDrive ($150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 12" 1.5GHz PowerBooks: 100GB 5400rpm HD ($150), Up to 1.256GB RAM ($425)
With these options, the wait at The Apple Store increases to 1-3 business days. Note that some of the options will actually reduce the price of the PowerBook. For instance, choosing an 80GB hard drive, as opposed to the standard 100GB hard drive, will lower the price of the 17" PowerBook by $100 to $2594. Choosing a Combo Drive with the 15" 1.67GHz model lowers the price by $150 to $2149.
