Amazingly close to exactly four years ago, I wrote a couple of columns here covering the then spankin' new dual USB iBook. I was so enamoured with the promise of the machine during the Stevenote, that I promptly ran out and sold my relatively new Pismo in anticipation of getting my hands on Apple's new laptop. Four years have past, and in that time I've gone through three portable Macs, numerous Apple Messagepads, and a couple of desktop Macs. I've also managed to find a really great job as a technology coordinator in a higher- education department which is very mac-centric. Amazingly, I've actually managed to keep and often use that iBook through these 4 years for a whole number of amazing things. This week, I'd like to revisit my original thoughts recorded a week or so after I brought the iBook home. My goal? Hopefully something useful can be said here about the nature of our first impressions and the way in which a Macintosh can weather a few years in my backpack. Read More

The Pismo, properly known as the PowerBook G3 2000 FireWire, was a watershed model in the literal sense. It was the first Apple portable with built-in FireWire, and introduced the motherboard architecture that would be used in the first 1.5 generations of Titanium G4 PowerBooks. On the other hand, it was the last-ever G3 PowerBook (albeit upgradable to G4), the last Apple 'Book to facilitate processor upgrades by virtue of having its CPU mounted on a removable daughtercard, and the last to feature the convenience, versatility, and simple upgrading qualities of a removable device expansion bay. The Pismo shipped with a tray-loading CD/DVD-ROM drive in the expansion bay -- the first PowerBook to come with DVD support standard across the board.
For my own Pismo, I also have ZIP drive and Superdisk modules, the latter of which also reads and writes 1.4k floppies, although it is no longer supported in all aspects 10.3 Panther and presumably neither by 10.4 Tiger. Read More...

Apple is recalling and exchanging the batteries in 12" and 15" PowerBook G4s and 12" iBooks sold between October 2004 and May 2005:
"In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities, Apple is voluntarily recalling certain lithium ion rechargeable batteries that were sold worldwide from October 2004 through May 2005 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. These batteries were manufactured by LG Chem, Ltd. of South Korea. The affected batteries could overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Apple has received six consumer reports of these batteries overheating. If you have a recalled battery, please stop using it and order a replacement battery immediately. Once you have removed the battery, plug in the AC adapter to power the computer. If you must temporarily use your computer with the battery, do not leave it unattended and check for signs of overheating. Apple has initiated a worldwide exchange program and will provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge."

If you don't have the scratch to pony up for a new Macintosh -- even an eMac, a Mac mini, or an iBook, it's something of a buyers market out there these days in use Macs. With the aforementioned entry-level Macs all selling for less than one thousand dollars, one should certainly consider whether, say, a Mac mini with a used or scrounged monitor, keyboard, and mouse might not be a more suitable option. The speedy G4 processors and powerful video accelerator cards that give our 'Books near-desktop power these days create lots of it, and have spawned a booming market in third-party solutions to help keep your laptop's torrid underside from singing your thighs or damaging furniture. Heat also shortens the life of electronic components, and can degrade performance of high bandwidth devices.
Most laptop auxiliary cooling solutions work on a passive convection principle by elevating the computer from the work surface, allowing air to circulate underneath carrying away heat and letting the machine cool more efficiently. Itˆs hard to believe, but the Aluminum PowerBooks have been around now for nearly 2 1/2 years, which makes them a ¶mature product¾ by historical measure. For some comparative context, the WallStreet G3 Series PowerBook was in production for a year; the G3 Lombard for just eight months; and the G3 Pismo for 11 months.
However, Apple has been trending toward the longer production lifespans for its computer products in recent years. The original metal-skinned PowerBook, the Titanium G4, had a 30-month production run in four distinct revisions and seven CPU speed ratings. Apple released new eMacs today with faster 1.42GHz G4 processors and larger hard drives (up to 160GB with the SuperDrive model). The standard two-model Combo/SuperDrive configuration remains the same, as do prices ($799/$999).
The SuperDrive model includes the 160GB hard drive, 512MB of RAM, and an 8x dual-layer SuperDrive for $999. The Combo model has an 80GB hard drive and 256MB of RAM for $799. Both models include ATI Radeon 9600 graphics with 64MB VRAM and Mac OS X 10.4.
Both models are available from The Apple Store today with 1-2 day shipping.

The Apple Store has several build-to-order (BTO) options available with new PowerBook G4s. With these options, you can configure the size of the hard drive, the type of optical drive, and the amount of included memory:
- 17" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 80GB hard drive (-$100), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), Combo Drive (-$150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850), 128MB VRAM ($100)

Laptops are great. Wi-Fi is great. Together, a laptop and a Wi-Fi connection mean you can work almost anywhere. Thing is, not everywhere you can hop on a Wi-Fi network with your PowerBook is going to have a nice flat, clean surface on which to physically set up shop. Coffee shop tables are notoriously grungy, trains often don't have seatback fold-out trays, and in many a Wi-Fi enabled city park you'll be lucky to find a clean place to sit, let alone a table you'd want to put your Mac down upon.
Luckily, the folks at Shaun Jackson Design / Higher Ground took all of this (and then some) into account when designing their Laptrap computer sleeves. Read More...
