In their 17-year history, beginning with the Mac Portable in 1989, portable Macs have earned an enviable -- almost legendary -- reputation for toughness and reliability, albeit with the odd lapse -- notably the PowerBook 5300, which, ironically, was also the most expensive Apple portable ever in its ce version.

From a cost/power/value perspective, the short answer to the propositional question is of course the base, $1,099, 1.83 GHz MacBook, or if you really need a SuperDrive, the white, 2.0 GHz version. You've never been able to get more raw power and features in a Mac laptop for that kind of money.
However, it's a bit more complicated than that. On paper, the MacBook is impressive, with Core Duo processors, its wide, medium resolution display, 2 GB of memory capacity, support for monitor spanning, and the usual raft of Apple laptop features carried over from the iBook.
Indeed, Apple narrowed the power and features spectrum from low end to high end to less than it's ever been with Apple portables, save for a short interval in 1996 when the PowerBook 1400 was the only available choice in two not-too-different iterations. At least on paper, there's not a humongous difference in performance between a 1.83 GHz and a 2.16 GHz Core Duo, which the overall price gap (from base MacBook to 17" MacBook Pro) is a whopping $1,500, and the price difference between a similarly configured MacBook and 15" MacBook Pro (2.0GHz, 512MB, 80GB HD) is still $650. That low-end MacBook may be $100 more expensive than the iBook model it replaces, but it's still a stunning value for the money. Read More...

Glossy screens have been standard equipment in the PC laptop world for a little while now, and they seem to be a love 'em or hate 'em kind of thing. Under the right lighting conditions the glossy finish does what marketers say it will: create the appearance of enhanced colors, depth, and contrast to provide more "pop" to your viewing experience. Under less than optimal light, however, glare and reflection can be a problem. "Optimal lighting" and "glare and reflection can be a problem" are subjective things: some people say the glossy finish is great 99% of the time, while others would rather go back to MS-DOS than be stuck with a glossy screen. Apple is offering the MacBook Pro in a choice of matte or glossy screen finishes; it remains to be seen if they'll offer a similar choice on the MacBook (though likely not). Still, it might be worth reading some user reports and spending a little time with a MacBook yourself before investing in a glossy finish-only new computer. Read More...

The MacBook is the machine I've been waiting for. When the MacBook Pros came out, I almost sold my iBook G4 to finance a deal on a slightly used PowerBook G4 someone was selling cheap to finance a new MBP. I'm glad I didn't. The $1,299 "mid range" MacBook has me drooling, especially at the $1,199 education-discounted (or Amazon-after rebate) price. Crumpler sent us two laptop bags for review, a backpack and a messenger bag. Both bags are made from a water resistant 1000d nylon shell with a 420d ripstop nylon lining and feature webbed nylon straps, thick padding, and touches like oversized zipper pulls and large velcro pad closures that scream "I mean business." The PowerPC era of Apple laptop computers is now officially over. Like hit TV series that go into syndication after successful production runs, the PPC 'Books will live on for quite some time on the used and refurbished markets, but Apple's transition to Intel is now complete in the portable sector. The last of the G4 Mohicans - the 12" PowerBook and the 12" and 14" iBooks are gone from the Apple store, all three replaced by the new 13" MacBook which features Intel Core Duo processors and a glossy 1280 x 800 widescreen display, in a completely new package that Apple says is be up to five times faster than the iBook and up to four times faster than the 12-inch PowerBook. That would of course be when running Intel-native software.
Unlike the MacBook Pros, which owe a great deal to the industrial design of their PowerBook G4 predecessors, these new MacBooks are a completely new from a clean slate design - and thus the first MacIntel Macintoshes - portable or desktop - with no design carry-over from the PPC era. They also include, and the very top of the line, the first black Apple laptop in more than half a decade, the last being the 2000 Pismo PowerBook G3, (and I was going to say, "the first black iBook ever," except of course these MacBooks are neither iBook nor PowerBook). Apple boosted 15" MacBook Pro CPU speeds today from 1.83GHz to 2GHz on the low-end, and 2.0GHz to 2.16GHz on the high-end. There is no longer a build-to-order CPU option with the high-end 15" MacBook Pro. Prices and availability remain the same.
Apple also added the option of a Glossy Display, for free, with any 15" or 17" MacBook Pro. According to Apple: "Choose the glossy widescreen display to make your graphics, photos, and videos appear with richer color and deeper blacks -- great for watching DVD movies. iHome's iH5 iPod Clock radio is a great idea done very well. For $99 you get an AM/FM clock radio, iPod docking station with recharging capabilities, and a pretty decent little stereo system that can fill a room with music from the radio, your iPod, or an alternative source via an aux input jack. While a small handful of iPod speaker systems in the iH5's price range offer slightly better audio quality, none of them offer the combination of sound, features, and price that iHome has served up. I don't know what it is with "top ten" lists. I guess we have this compulsion to think about things in more than random order -- or at least some of us do. Now that the sun is about to set on the PowerBook name and era, at least as far as new machines go, with the last PowerBook, the 1.5 GHz 12" G4 looking mighty lonely all by itself on the Apple Store homepage, we can compile a closed-ended top 10 PowerBooks ever list. I still have a glimmer of hope that Apple might resurrect the illustrious PowerBook name sometime in the future, but it's not a very lively hope.
So here goes. I don't imagine that everyone will agree with my choices, but I've tried to pick the ten PowerBooks that were both solid performers that stayed in service longer than average and that were particularly significant from a design perspective. Read More...
