From a cost/power/value perspective, the short answer to the propositional question is of course the base, $1,099, 1.83 GHz MacBook, or if you really need a SuperDrive, the white, 2.0 GHz version. You've never been able to get more raw power and features in a Mac laptop for that kind of money.

However, it's a bit more complicated than that. On paper, the MacBook is impressive, with Core Duo processors, its wide, medium resolution display, 2 GB of memory capacity, support for monitor spanning, and the usual raft of Apple laptop features carried over from the iBook.

Indeed, Apple narrowed the power and features spectrum from low end to high end to less than it's ever been with Apple portables, save for a short interval in 1996 when the PowerBook 1400 was the only available choice in two not-too-different iterations. At least on paper, there's not a humongous difference in performance between a 1.83 GHz and a 2.16 GHz Core Duo, which the overall price gap (from base MacBook to 17" MacBook Pro) is a whopping $1,500, and the price difference between a similarly configured MacBook and 15" MacBook Pro (2.0GHz, 512MB, 80GB HD) is still $650. That low-end MacBook may be $100 more expensive than the iBook model it replaces, but it's still a stunning value for the money. Read More...

Glossy screens have been standard equipment in the PC laptop world for a little while now, and they seem to be a love 'em or hate 'em kind of thing. Under the right lighting conditions the glossy finish does what marketers say it will: create the appearance of enhanced colors, depth, and contrast to provide more "pop" to your viewing experience. Under less than optimal light, however, glare and reflection can be a problem. "Optimal lighting" and "glare and reflection can be a problem" are subjective things: some people say the glossy finish is great 99% of the time, while others would rather go back to MS-DOS than be stuck with a glossy screen. Apple is offering the MacBook Pro in a choice of matte or glossy screen finishes; it remains to be seen if they'll offer a similar choice on the MacBook (though likely not). Still, it might be worth reading some user reports and spending a little time with a MacBook yourself before investing in a glossy finish-only new computer. Read More...

The MacBook is the machine I've been waiting for. When the MacBook Pros came out, I almost sold my iBook G4 to finance a deal on a slightly used PowerBook G4 someone was selling cheap to finance a new MBP. I'm glad I didn't. The $1,299 "mid range" MacBook has me drooling, especially at the $1,199 education-discounted (or Amazon-after rebate) price.
