Last week I posted a retro-flavored comparo profile of a circa 2000 IBM ThinkPad A20m and the contemporaneous Apple PowerBook G3 2000 FireWire, aka Pismo. While the IBM notebook had its virtues - very solid, rugged construction, an excellent standard of finish, easy hard drive swapping, and a nice keyboard, the choice between the two, for me, would be a no-brainer. Recently, I happened to have around the office for a few weeks an IBM ThinkPad A20m running Windows XP, which provided an opportunity for a direct comparison with a contemporaneous PowerBook G3 2000 Pismo 500 MHz that also is here, as well as my faithful G4 550 MHz hotrodded Pismo. Windows machines always bemuse me a bit, because I find it difficult to fathom how anyone has the patience to put up with the angularities of Microsoftˆs operating system, regardless of the merits or otherwise of the PC hardware. The ThinkPad has the longstanding reputation of being the cream of the crop in Windows PC laptops, but I had never had the chance to really check one out at my leisure before, and I was interested to see how this unit would measure up against a PowerBook of approximately the same vintage and power. OK, OK, it wasnˆt get up in the night and write home about it exciting, but the ¶Revision C¾ MacBooks released yesterday are a welcome speed bump and spec enhancement. Perhaps bigger news is what there isnˆt, notably no Intel Santa Rosa next-gen CPUs, no LED display backlights, and no replacement or upgrade of the much-maligned Intel GMA 950 ¶vampire video¾ graphics support. Apple refreshes 13-MacBooks with new models

Apple released midly refreshed 13-MacBooks today with Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs ranging up to 2.16GHz. The new models come in three configurations, as before, with a low-end 2.0GHz White model for $1099, and two higher-end 2.16GHz MacBooks for $1299 (White) and $1499 (Black).
The low-end White MacBook now sports 1GB of standard RAM and an 80GB hard drive, in addition to a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU with performance-enhancing 4MB of shared L2 cache. It's available today for $1099 at The Apple Store.
The high-end Black and White MacBooks gain a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB of shared L2 cache and a new 8x SuperDrive. The White model has a new 120GB hard drive, while the Black MacBook comes with a standard 160GB hard drive. The 2.16GHz White MacBook is available today at The Apple Store for $1299, while the Black model lists for $1499.
All three models include built-in 802.11n wireless capability.

Earlier this year, PBCentral.com reported that Apple had declared certain Mac models (like the 12" PowerBook G4 that this article is being typed on) officially "dead." To add insult to injury, if your "current" Mac model is on display at a museum in the Italian province of Savona, it's probably about that time to, think different about your non-Intel Mac. Last week, ruling n a specific complaint case, Denmarkˆs Consumer Complaints Board said it now has evidence of a hidden, original design defect in Appleˆs iBook G4. That a serious problem existed with the G3 dual USB iBook is indisputable and was acknowledged by Apple with an extended repair program (now expired) through which iBook users within a specified serial number range could get their computersˆ logic boards replaced if the defect materialized. It was widely believed, or at least hoped, that the problem had been licked with the introduction of the G4 iBook in late 2003. From time to time the odd complaint about a G4 iBook logic board failure has come to my attention, but a certain incidence of such failures can be anticipated with any computer model. Read More...

Yesterday, IBM announced that they had made a major technological breakthrough in the chip-making process that will allow them to manufacture faster and smaller chips than previously available, and because of this, power consumption is reduced by 15 percent.
