Apple introduces new Cinema Displays; up to 30 inches

Apple today introduced a new line of Cinema Displays including a high-end 30 inch display capable of 2560 x 1600 resolution. The new lineup consists of a 20" LCD for $1299, 23" LCD for $1999, and the 30" LCD for $3299. The new displays feature an aluminum enclosure, adjustable hinge, and DVI connectivity. The high-end 30" display is only compatible with the Power Mac G5 and uses a specially-designed graphics card.

All three models are available for order today at The Apple Store. There is a 2-4 week wait for the 20" and 23" models, while the 30" model will be available in August. The previous-generation 17" Studio Display is available for $699 -- a $300 price drop.

Connecting a 3G iPod to your home stereo through the line-out jack on the dock is the easiest way to great sound at home, but what about when you want to take the music with you on a picnic, to a party, or just out to the hammock in the backyard? The success of the iPod has spawned a handful of portable, wire-connected speaker systems designed specifically for use with it. I took a look at the Altec Lansing InMotion system a few months ago. Apple made a big splash online earlier this week with the introduction of their Airport Express wireless hub/repeater/print server/music server gadget, promising to "free your music from your computer" and bring it to your stereos where it belongs. As exciting as the forthcoming $129 Express sounds, it's more of a nifty all-in-one gadget than a serious wireless music system -- at least until Apple brings a wireless remote control to market. Windows users have a choice of nearly a dozen (if not more) wireless media server/receivers for streaming music -- and, in some cases, digital photos and video -- from their computers to their home entertainment systems. The souped-up little white brick, which ships in July, is equal parts cool, risky, and head-shaking, "How'd they think of that? innovative." Apple today introduced AirPort Express, a small and portable solution to the problem of wireless networking while on the road. "With AirPort Express, your wireless life stays wireless even when you’re on the road. Many hotels may have wireless service available in some designated parts of their buildings but not in their guest rooms. With AirPort Express, it won’t matter — as long as your hotel room is wired for broadband, you can create your own wireless network with AirPort Express. Just connect the AirPort Express Base Station to the room’s Ethernet network jack, plug it into an electrical outlet and you’re online wirelessly. With your AirPort-equipped PowerBook or Wi-Fi-compliant PC notebook, you can surf the web or check your email in any part of your room, not just at the desk next to the Ethernet connection — it’s as if you never left your Wi-Fi-equipped house or office."

AirPort Express also provides wireless printing: "Have several computers in your home but only one printer? No problem. Just connect a printer to the USB port on the AirPort Express Base Station and the printer instantly becomes available to everyone on your wireless network. No longer do you need to move your printer from one place to another to connect it to this or that computer. No more dealing with tangled cables or emailing files from one computer to another that’s connected to the printer."

Lastly, AirPort Express includes AirTunes: "AirPort Express with AirTunes brings your iTunes music in your Mac or PC into your living room — or wherever in your home you have a stereo or a set of powered speakers.
