Apple's laptop CPU supplier for a little while longer Freescale Semiconductor this week officially announced the MPC7448 G4 chip, which has been sampling since February and is slated for full production in October, which interestingly coincides fairly closely with the anticipated release of a 14.1-inch widescreen iBook model, the contract for production of which The Economic Daily News., cited by Forbes and Digitimes, reports has been awarded to Taiwan's Asustek Computer, in something of an upset to Quanta Computer which had been expected to get the order that could total as many as 500,000 machines. Why MacIntel Is Good News For PowerBook And iBook Fans

Steve Jobs' WWDC bombshell announcement that Apple will be switching from Power PC to Intel processors over the next couple of years pretty much puts paid to the prospect of a G5 PowerBook -- now almost certainly to remain forever vapor. It's hard to conceive of Apple expanding any more development resources or Energy on the G5, PowerBook project, even if IBM were willing to play ball, which they likely aren't. Apple will be focused on getting Intel-based books ready for 2006 release.

Which begs the question of what will happen in the meantime. Apple laptops are already lagging way behind X86 Intel PC notebooks in the megahertz race, albeit not necessarily in real-world, practical performance. However, the puny speed-bump from 1.5 GHz to 1.67 GHz at the top end of the last PowerBook revisions indicates that G4 speed advances have slowed to a near-standstill, and the year that will elapse before the debut of the first Intel-based Macs could be a very long one indeed if some sort of portable performance boost can't be engineered in the meantime.

Whatever transpires, I am pretty confident that the PowerBook will remain G4-based until new Intel versions are ready. Read More...

I, like you, was sitting in front of my Cinema Display with diet Coke in hand and lots of hopeful thoughts in head this morning at 10am PST. I was feeling mostly smug over my knowledge that the rumors which surfaced over the weekend were going to be shortly dismissed. I've been a Mac guy for some time and I've seen my fair share of Apple/Intell rumors come and go. Like the new Newton (my favorite!), the Disney takeover and the Powerbook G5, they mostly evaporate in the light of the keynote. That was, they did until today.

I'm going to argue here that, for good or ill, the big news of the upcoming AppTel hardware doesn't end up meaning much of anything for you and I as end users. I don't think its going to interrupt our computer buying much, and its really not going to impact our actual computer experience at all. Whether that's good or bad I'll leave up to you to decide. Apple switches to Intel processors beginning in June 2006

At Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference today, Steve Jobs announced that Apple will be switching to Intel processors beginning in June, 2006. ¶Our goal is to provide our customers with the best personal computers in the world, and looking ahead Intel has the strongest processor roadmap by far,¾ said Steve Jobs, Appleˆs CEO. ¶Itˆs been ten years since our transition to the PowerPC, and we think Intelˆs technology will help us create the best personal computers for the next ten years.¾

Apple plans to ship Macs with Intel CPUs beginning in June, 2006. They plan to complete the transition by the end of 2007. Read the full press release here. He did not mention which Macs wil make the swtch first.

Something I like to call "the PowerBook mystique," from which derives the name of this column series, and encompasses iBooks as well, which I consider to be entry-level PowerBooks in every sense of the word other than name, and arguably more worthy examples of the PowerBook aura than certain actual PowerBooks of the past have been, such as the rugged but under powered and connectivity-challenged PowerBook 150, or, I suppose, even the PowerBook 5300, which is arguably the Apple laptop with the worst reputation ever (and ironically, the most expensive PowerBook ever sold in its top-end ¶ce¾ configuration).
