"Dear Charles, I have been reading your reviews for years and appreciate them more than any others I read. I respect your opinions because I believe you have great technical insights, but even more importantly I believe your moral and spiritual stands carry a trustworthiness I can rely on. After reading your reviews on 5300s and 1400s I purchased those and used them for years (I am a teacher) and your more recent advice led me to the Pismo, which I love. Wow, what a great machine. My question for you is is it worth it to upgrade my Pismo to a G4 and just stay with it for awhile or maybe invest in my first "new" computer in about 15 years and get one of the new Macbooks. I also notice that the price on other Mac laptops is dropping so do I opt for one of those. I do not have SuperDrive in my Pismo and my SuperDrive just went out in my iMac so I guess I will have to replace it, so that works a bit into the equation. I am also wondering if the MacBook can hook up to a larger monitor or keyboard so that my office work is easier on my eyes and fingers (I am still a lot slower on the Pismo keyboard). Lastly, can you recommend a good remote for my Keynote presentations in the classroom? There are so many options out there that I get rummy reading them. I know you are incredibly busy, so if you cannot write back, I understand. Thanks for your insights."

Apple announced yesterday that CEO Steve Jobs will deliver the keynote address at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, August 7 in San Francisco, CA. Jobs will take the stage alongside Apple SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller and other execs to give the world a peek at Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard."

Apple's next major release of OS X is expected to deliver many significant Intel-specific improvements and features. Rumors are also flying around the possibility of Apple introducing the first Pro-level desktop Mac at the conference. Following Intel-Mac naming conventions to date, the new machines would be called MacPro, and could possibly feature the new Intel Core Duo 2 processor in a quad-core configuaration. Read More...

'Books are Still Laptops, But Sometimes A Bit Of Help Is Necessary

It has been suggested that the term "laptop" applied to portable computers is obsolete, since many newer models, such as the Apple MacBook Pro and MacBook run so hot that it is uncomfortable or even hazardous to use them on your lap. However, in an Apple Education article entitled: "Work and Fun: 101 - Everything you need to know to get your work done and have fun with a Mac," one of the subheads is:

'Intel Core Duo On your lap. In your dorm room. Organize your class notes and your music. Select models now feature a superfast dual-core Intel engine, a built-in iSight camera, and Front Row software.'

It seems that Apple has not entirely abandoned the concept of laptop computing, and personally, I'm not ready to give up on the laptop nomenclature, even if as a practical reality it is necessary to use a laptop desk of some sort to insulate computer from thighs. One of the advantages of moving to Intel CPUs from Power PC was supposed to be cooler-running laptops. To say that has not yet been realized would be an understatement, but I'm still hopeful that less literally torrid portable CPUs with competitive performance are not an engineering dead-end. However, in the meantime, there are a number of solutions that can protect both the 'Book and its user from temperature buildup. Read More...

Many PowerBook fans lamented and mourned the discontinuation of the PowerBook G3 2000 FireWire, aka "Pismo" after an all-too-short 10-month production run in that eponymous year. Some still do, and considering its brief tenure on the market, there are an astonishing number of Pismos still in active duty, including one that belongs to me.

The Pismo's facility for upgrading and expansion has helped, of course. My own machine, purchased used in pristine condition in October, 2001, has been hotrodded with a 550 MHz G4 processor upgrade, 640 megabytes of RAM, a 40 gigabyte, 5400 r.p.m. hard drive, a FastMac 8x SuperDrive expansion bay module (it also came with the Zip and SuperDisk modules in addition to the original DVD-ROM drive), and a Miglia FireWire 800 PC Card adapter. If you like laptop keyboards, as I do, but want to use an external keyboard in conjunction with a laptop stand or in order to have a full complement of navigation keys and a numerical keypad, the range of choice available is not expansive.

Most external keyboards have a relatively long key travel and too much "over-center" tactile feedback for my tastes, and many have a stiff key-action and a "hard landing." I struggle with chronic peripheral neuritis, and my preference (indeed, non-negotiable requirement) is for very light, smooth action, very short travel, and a soft landing, and the benchmark for these qualities in my experience has been the wonderful scissors-action keyboard that shipped with the WallStreet PowerBooks back in 1998. The keyboards in the G4 PowerBooks and MacBook Pros are pretty good too, but I prefer to use a full keyboard when in desktop substitute mode, and my quest has been for a freestanding 'board that approximated the laptop keyboards referred to. One keyboard I found reasonably tolerable is the MacAlly iceKey, which utilizes PowerBook keyboard style scissors-action key technology, but sadly, the IceKey's key resistance was a lot stiffer than with my benchmark WallStreet keyboard.
