iPhone: Hands-on First Impressions

Some Saturday morning errands took me past the AT&T Store in downtown Berkeley, CA, so I popped in to get my hands on an iPhone. I didn't buy one -- though they did have "one eight gig model" in stock, according to the salesman behind the counter -- but rather spent several minutes trying out one of the display models. What follows is in no way a review, but rather some first impressions based on about fifteen minutes of hands-on time with a display unit ... and six months' worth of hype overload before that. We all know it's going to be a madhouse at all Apple and AT&T stores over the next two days, especially in locations with both storefronts just "inches" away from each other. We'd recommend staying away from those locations since that's where all the action is going to be, but in the location where this columnist resides and frequently visits, two interesting thoughts came to mind.

The first is to stay away from those types of locations at all costs (we have no choice since that's where we're doing our coverage tomorrow evening). Lining up at a lesser-known AT&T location--though by this point, all AT&T stores are probably in the spotlight, regardless of location... especially in markets where an Apple Store doesn't exist--and one that is a stand-alone store would probably be best in order to minimize the chaos. If you read the commentary on these pages from Friday in regard to what Apple Inc. might be endeavoring to achieve as a company in its current incarnation (position its assets on a global scale), maybe the big guys are looking into the crystal ball of the little guys as inspiration for their stories? Instead of vice versa?

The New York Times "aired" a piece yesterday about the Hollywood factor and how that form of big media is reacting to the iPhone's impact on the industry as a whole. The article seems to touch base and corroborate the points made in the commentary piece that was based on a research study done by PriceWaterhouseCoopers on trends in the industry, both related to media, spending by business and consumers, and where it's heading in the next five years. Okay, we all know that the iPhone is going to be an earth-changing event or sorts. To quote the Cingular Wireless employee we interviewed Tuesday, "...a pandemic of a zeitgeist..." But a press release today from PriceWaterhouseCoopers seems to point to something bigger that no one but Apple Inc. themselves sees coming... positioning the company's assets on a global scale.

For a company to be successful, they can't be only good at one thing. Well, they can, but that limits their influence and control in the industry. If Apple Inc. were still "Apple Computer, Inc." and solely focused on their Macs and the subsequent proprietary operating system--today known as "Mac OS X"--they would only be, well, I hate to say it, a nobody. Yesterday evening was the ten day countdown to the iPhone's release and just shy of that exacting mark (an hour and a half shy), a visit to an AT&T owned and operated Cingular Wireless store garnered some interesting information-- what AT&T's stake is in this ball game, especially when the key player in the all-star game is Apple Inc.

We've been hearing a lot about what Apple plans to do with their iPhone in terms of marketing and the like. With the iPod at its core, the whole "halo effect" of the iPod leading to more sales of Mac hardware and converts from Windows/PC land could possibly have the same effect.
