Back in April I posted a ‘Book Mystique column about my adventures cloning my 2.0 GHz unibody MacBook’s hard drive of to a SimpleTech Duo Pro 1 TB external hard drive using its USB 2.0 interface (the Duo Pro also supports FireWire 400 and 800 and eSATA transfers, but of course the poor MacBook is bereft of any of those superior alternatives). Using Mike Bombich’s excellent Carbon Copy Cloner utility, which has worked well for me on Power PC machines with FireWire 400 ports, I was dismayed to discover that the clone run for the not quite half-filled 108 GB partition took more than 24 hours to complete — far, far longer than it took for roughly the same amount of data to be copied when I cloned my 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 PowerBook’s drive to the Duo Pro over FireWire 400. I didn’t think they would, but they did. Apple of course couldn’t have helped hearing the crescendo of dismay over their decision to not include a FireWire port in the 13 inch aluminum MacBook released last October, but I was highly skeptical that they would take positive remedial action. However, they just did, as part of one of the most substantial value-added Apple laptop product revisions I can recall, the closest analog perhaps being the “PDQ” makeover of the then just four-month-old WallStreet G3 Series PowerBook line in September, 1998. Apple revamps MacBooks, introduces new models

Apple introduced new MacBooks today, revamped their mix of models, and reduced prices from $100-$300 across the range.
First and foremost, Apple is now calling the aluminum 13" MacBook the 13" MacBook Pro. It comes in two flavors; 13" 2.26GHz/2GB/160GB for $1199 and 13" 2.53GHz/4GB/250GB for $1499. Both models include a new SD card slot.
The 15" model is offered in three models; 15" 2.53GHz/4GB/250GB for $1699, 15" 2.66GHz/4GB/320GB for $1999, and 15" 2.8GHz/4GB/500GB for $2299. A 3.06GHz CPU is a $300 build-to-order option with the 2.8GHz model. The 15" MacBook Pros now come with a SD card slot instead of the ExpressCard slot.
Both 15" and 13" MacBook Pros sport new unibody cases similar to the 17" model, with the 7-hour internal battery.
The 17" MacBook Pro is now offered with a 2.8GHz CPU for $2499, while a 3.06GHz model is offered for an extra $300.
Finally, the MacBook AIr is now offered in a 1.86GHz/120GB HD model for $1499 and a 2.13GHz/128GB SSD model for $1799.
