To millions of young New Yorkers -- and millions of their kindred spirits around the country and world -- late July means it's almost August, and we all know what comes after August: Back to School. For me, back to school this year will mean back to working in a school full-time. I've accepted a job as Technology Coordinator at an elementary-level charter school up in Spanish Harlem. It's a great gig -- they've got good administration, good faculty, a technology plan that fits with and welcomes my vision of education, and generally speaking, a good thing happening. They also have one cart with 11 Windows laptops, no current technology staff (one of the finance guys did a great job now and then last year teaching the kids some things), and a big gaping desire-cum-need to get a technology program happening. And, oh yeah, they've got little money to spend on hardware -- go figure. Read More...

There has been a 3-5 day wait for 12" PowerBooks at The Apple Store for at least the past week or so. The 1GHz 15" model is listed with a 1-3 day wait, while the 15" 867MHz model went from 'Same Day' shipping earlier today to a 1-3 day wait. The $300 rebate is available via a mail-in coupon (PDF). Get $200 back on the purchase of said laptops and any iPod, without the Canon printer.

The Apple Store has slashed prices for Education customers (students and teachers) across the board by as much as $150. We can only assume that this is to encourage students and educators to purchase new equipment as we approach the new school year. These prices are for individuals purchasing new Macs -- the prices are now the same as for those purchasing equipment for their schools. Much to our surprise, Apple did not introduce any new PowerBooks, or any hardware at all, today at Macworld. A lot of people were hoping for new 15" PowerBooks today, especially students preparing for the upcoming school year. Even without today's introduction, stock is still low at several resellers, so we're hoping for new models soon. Stay tuned -- perhaps we'll see a surprise Tuesday announcement in the next week or two.
