With an iPod, iPhone, or other digital music player you carry your your music library in a portable self-contained package, which is very convenient provided you’re content listening to it in private through earbuds or earphones. However, music is at its best when shared, and earphone listening is more than a little anti-social, and in certain contexts, rude. Unless you have two sets of earphones and a splitter, only one person can enjoy the iPod’s output at a time unless it’s connected to a loudspeaker audio system, which works fine, but does defeat the untethered factor, and obliges one to be in the physical location of the iPod/amplifier/speakers setup to operate the controls. However, Boston-based Zoom Technologies Inc. has a nifty solution that lets you carry the iPod conveniently on your person while still listening through powered speakers or your home stereo system, so long as you stay within range of Bluetooth wireless connectivity. I just hope I don't run into all the worst problems I've heard about with it. :("

"I placed my order for a 15" MBP with our campus bookstore July 18. I was shocked when they told me to expect at least a 4 week delay. My MBP configuration was one of two bundles they were promoting (same specs as the 2.4GHz model on the Apple store site, plus AppleCare). Price (minus sales tax): $2,200. Advantage to buying from the bookstore: two year, no interest loan for faculty."

Apple’s Intel-based MacBook Pros and MacBooks run famously hot, and the later model G4 PowerBooks can get pretty sultry as well. In fact, the high operating temperatures of these machines is the reason why Apple, no doubt with an eye to potential product liability torts, has stopped referring to them genetically as “laptops”, substituting “notebook” instead. I lament the change of terminology. Laptop was a good and accurately descriptive word for the way most portable computer owners still use their machines at least some of the time. On the other hand, notebook is OK too, I guess, since it’s the designation that the “book” MacBook, PowerBook and iBook derives from. I digress. Read More...
