I donō know about you, but the torrent of announcements about Intelì next generation of CPU chips for portable computers is making me a whole lot more excited about the next generation of Apple PowerBooks and iBooks that will be launched next year.

Any lingering doubts I might have had about whether the switch to Intel from Power PC is a good idea are quickly withering away. Frankly, there is no way that Freescale and IBM were going to come anywhere near matching the concentrated engineering effort Intel is devoting to development of new chips that are both powerful, and more importantly in the case of portable computers -- feature low power consumption and heat generating characteristics. Is your 蕤ook ailing? Apple computers and the Mac OS are pretty reliable, but once in a while even Macs can have problems, and when the issue is disk-related, the tool I turn to first (and usually last) is Alsoftì superb disk diagnostic, maintenance, and repair utility, DiskWarrior.

DiskWarrior made its debut back in 1998, and it was a winner from the get-go. Elegant in its simplicity, DiskWarrior was designed to do essentially one task, and to do it superbly well - repair disk directory damage cleanly, efficiently, and effectively, (although the program can also be configured to check hard drives for media and or mechanical malfunction as well). - 17" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 80GB hard drive (-$100), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), Combo Drive (-$150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850), 128MB VRAM ($100)
- 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), SuperDrive ($150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 12" 1.5GHz PowerBooks: 100GB 5400rpm HD ($150), Up to 1.256GB RAM ($425)

With these options, the wait at The Apple Store increases to 1-3 business days. Note that some of the options will actually reduce the price of the PowerBook. For instance, choosing an 80GB hard drive, as opposed to the standard 100GB hard drive, will lower the price of the 17" PowerBook by $100 to $2594. First of all, the proverbial "hot place beneath us" did indeed freeze over since last month when Apple released the multi-button "Mighty Mouse." I've yet to try one out, as the $49 price tag seems hefty for a mouse still sporting a tail, and user reviews have been mixed to date. However, the lure of a horizontially-capable scroll ball is strong and I may have to pony up for one the next time I'm near an Apple Store. After all, Mighty Mouse is only $44 after the education discount.

I do hope that Apple sees fit to start including Mighty Mouse as standard equipment with new Macs in the near future, as I have found the concept of "right-clicking" (contextual clicking) to be a strong component of teaching kids about the workings of operating systems and user interfaces. It might seem a simple thing, but the power of contextual menus is so much stronger when it can be accessed directly through a mouse-click.

The big news from my (and my school's) perspective this past year wasn't the introduction of a new product but rather Apple's decision to buck the rumors and keep an old workhorse in their current catalog. Read More...

Now that the question of what Apple was going to do about the iBook has been answered -- make it more like the PowerBook, the focus shifts to the PowerBook line, which was last refreshed in January. In the normal scheme of things, we would logically be expecting a round of speed bumps, feature enhancements, or even a new model release, at Macworld Expo Paris in September, now only a few weeks away.

Of course, these are not normal times, with the clock counting down to the release of Intel-based Macs next June, and with portables expected to be in the changeover vanguard. But it still a long time till June, and itì not a credible scenario that Apple would try to go 18 months without a PowerBook both update, so September is looking likely, with late October/early November another fallback possibility. Some might suggest that Apple's recently announced switch to Intel from Power PC processors is a logical cue to drop the "Power"Book nomenclature. However, there were PowerBooks on the market for four years before the first Power PC model arrived. At the beginning, the name applied to a machine with an 8 MHz Motorola 68000 processor. It was just coincidence that both designations contain the word "power," but it's not difficult to understand the overlap. - 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), Combo Drive (-$150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850), 128MB VRAM ($100)
- 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), SuperDrive ($150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 12" 1.5GHz PowerBooks: 100GB 5400rpm HD ($150), Up to 1.256GB RAM ($425)

With these options, the wait at The Apple Store increases to 1-3 business days. Note that some of the options will actually reduce the price of the PowerBook. "Son Of Pismo" Finally Realized With July '05 14" iBook?

After the PowerBook 2000 Pismo was discontinued in January, 2001 at the introduction of the first Titanium PowerBooks, a persistent rumor developed that Apple was at work on a "mid-range" G3 PowerBook with the tried-and-true 14.1" 1024 x 768 display that graced all three G3 Series PowerBook models. This vaporous machine was popularly referred to as "Son Of Pismo."

In early 2001, Apple had two laptop families with four separate variants � the new Titanium PowerBook G4 in 400 MHz and 500 MHz versions, and the clamshell iBook G3 in 366MHz and 466 MHz speeds. In May of that year the range narrowed further, with the new dual-USB iBook coming with 500 MHz G3 power across the board, although with four optical drive configuration options.

Nevertheless, "Son of Pismo" speculation continued throughout 2001, and at Macworld Expo San Francisco in January, 2002, it was revealed that there actually had been a new 14.1" laptop under development. However, the "middle-sized" machine that Steve Jobs unveiled wasn't a PowerBook, but rather a "stretch" dual-USB iBook, with a Pismo-sized screen in a larger version of the 12" iBook's case, as well as pretty much the same set of features and connectivity options as its smaller sibling. The Apple Store has several build-to-order (BTO) options available with new PowerBook G4s. With these options, you can configure the size of the hard drive, the type of optical drive, and the amount of included memory:

- 17" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 80GB hard drive (-$100), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), Combo Drive (-$150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850), 128MB VRAM ($100)
- 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), SuperDrive ($150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 12" 1.5GHz PowerBooks: 100GB 5400rpm HD ($150), Up to 1.256GB RAM ($425)

With these options, the wait at The Apple Store increases to 3-5 business days. Note that some of the options will actually reduce the price of the PowerBook. For instance, choosing an 80GB hard drive, as opposed to the standard 100GB hard drive, will lower the price of the 17" PowerBook by $100 to $2594. Choosing a Combo Drive with the 15" 1.67GHz model lowers the price by $150 to $2149.
