In a way I'm lucky. For most of my adult life I didn't have a car, since I lived in Brooklyn, NY and relied on the subway or my bike to get anywhere I couldn't walk. Taxis abounded for late night trips home from Manhattan. When I did need a car for some reason (usually either a music gig or a trip out of the city), I'd borrow one from a friend. Life was simple, and so was using my iPod in transit: Headphones on the subway, headphones when walking, no iPod on my bike. Simple.
Now I live in California and share one car with my (new) wife. I'm still lucky - it's a good car, a car big enough to haul my drums around in, and a car with a tape deck. So hooking the iPod up to the car is easy - we've got a couple of the old fashioned tape adaptors that plug into the iPod's headphone jack and playback through the tape deck. There are higher-fidelity ways to iPod your car, but this has served us fine - particularly over the factory-standard sound system in our car. Read More...

Apple is recalling batteries manufactured for 12" iBook G4s and 15"/12" PowerBook G4s: "Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances.
The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. Apple is voluntarily recalling the affected batteries and has initiated a worldwide exchange program to provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge." In the meantime, for research purposes only (of course!), I was trying to get a Divx file of a TV show I'd downloaded off of my iBook and onto my TV set. Using Toast to burn a DVD of the show was slow - Toast had to re-encode the Divx file to MPEG in order to create a DVD that my player could deal with. Since my DVD player had been acting funny anyway, I started looking around for a DVD player that could read Divx files, figuring that this kind of player would let me burn Divx video to a disc without re-encoding. While this would still require some SneakerNetting of the DVD from iBook to DVD player, it would at least cut down on the time it took to go from downloading to viewing. Read More...

Two things happened recently that led me to make my most recent electronics purchase. First, I killed my iPod. No, not on purpose for a YouTube video; I accidentally knocked it out of a second story window, whereupon it bounced off of the first floor roof and then crashed to the concrete patio below. The tough little guy - a black 5G 30 gig model - actually was found in one piece and even started playing again until I pressed the fast forward button. Then it freaked out and would only boot to the "Sad iPod" screen. Dead.
Second is that my wife and I missed an episode of a TV show we regularly watch. And we forgot to 'DVR' it ('DVR' being the term my employed-by-TiVo friend wants me to use to refer to TiVo-ing with my Comcast-brand non-TiVo DVR). Though I'm 90% certain that sharing digital copies of TV shows, even those originally broadcast on free TV, is illegal, I was curious. So I hopped on the Web, scanned a few Torrent sites, and found dozens of copies of said show available for download. Read More...

There are a ton of dual USB iBooks out there. Apples longest-running portable model, the White iBook was in production for a bit more than five years, in a dizzying assortment of a configurations with 12.1 inch and 14.1-inch display screens, and clock speeds of (G3) 500,600,700,800, and 900 MHz; and (G4) 800 and 933 MHz, and 1,1.2,1.33, and 1.42 GHz.
Consequently, there are an awful lot of white iBooks available used and refurbished, and notwithstanding some spotty reliability issues, they are my first-choice recommendation for anyone looking for an inexpensive Mac laptop who cant quite pony up the $1,100 for a new MacBook. Read More...

When the Intel-powered MacBook notebook computers first shipped a few months ago, the reviews and commentary on the new Macs tended to center on two topics: The speed of the new Intel Core Duo platform and the look of the two available color options. Most people I know (or whose reviews I read) tended to agree that the black MacBook is just plain cooler looking than the white, but spending what amounts to an extra $150 to get the black finish is a little ridiculous. Not ridiculous enough to stop people from doing it, mind you, but a little ridiculous all the same.
But then reports started surfacing - widely, at that - about discoloration problems on the white MacBooks. The area below the keyboard around the trackpad in particular was susceptible to quick and awful staining and discoloring, seemingly caused by whatever chemical reactions occur when human wrists rest on MacBook plastic repeatedly. I guess I was way ahead of the curve for once, making the switch from desktop Macs to laptops as my main production workhorses back in 1996, since which Ive been advocating them as the logical Mac for most users to anyone willing to listen.
With the advent of the MacBook Pro era, complaints about lazy Apple laptop...uh...notebook performance should be put to rest for the foreseeable future. The MacBook Pro even runs Windows on par with the fastest PC laptops. However, the cheapest MacBook offers performance outstripping the needs of all but extreme power users, as well as serious gamers. Most anyone else should find any MacIntel Book more than adequate, and the biggest productivity/convenience/versatility boost in computing will be derived by switching from a desktop to a laptop computer. PowerPage contributor Joshua Stein advises that Mac users not underestimate the value of the AppleCare Protection Plan - particularly if you are going to buy a MacBook or MacBook Pro - there are just too many things that can go wrong and replacing notebooks and their parts can be very expensive.
True enough, but Ive heard the same argument made advocating the purchase of AppleCare for Mac portables since I bought my PowerBook 5300 10 years ago. Ive never heeded it, and so far Ive had exactly zero problems that AppleCare would have addressed. The processor failure in my WallStreet PowerBook happened at 3 1/2 years, and Ive never even made a warranty claim under the basic 1 year warranty. Read More...
