TiBook prices have been falling sharply of late, and I've seen the odd 400 MHz first-generation Ti offered at less than $500, so the older Titanium units are definitely now in the same price range as late generation G3 iBooks and not that much less than refurbished G4 iBooks. Late last week, Apple was offering Certified Refurbished iBook G4 1.2GHz units for $699.00.
This relatively rapid resale price decline of the TiBook by historical PowerBook standards is attributable to a number of factors. One is supply and demand. The Ti was in production for 28 months, and a large number of them were sold. There were relatively frequent speed bumps and specification upgrades -- while the last 1 GHz Tis look pretty much identical to the original "one more thing" machine Steve Jobs rolled out on the MacWorld San Francisco stage in January, 2001, it was really an almost completely different machine inside. It is, I think, a tiny bit ironic that Brooklyn Industries only contacted me about reviewing their laptop sleeve and laptop-friendly messenger bags after I left the Borough of Kings - my home of almost ten years - for Oakland, California. I mean, what's a guy gotta do to get on the PR list for a local company? Move all the way across the country? Apparently, yes ... at least in this case.
To be fair, Brooklyn Industries wasn't even a company ten years ago, let alone one that had expanded from one store full of homegrown T-shirts to five outposts of hipster-friendly clothing, bags, and accessories. So I shouldn't really complain. Rather, I should be pretty happy that I got the chance to give their new Laptop Sleeve and Large Messenger Bag a run for their money -- even if doing so on the sunny streets of California is making me a bit nostalgic for the Urban Jungle of New York City. And I am happy about it, for Brooklyn has turned out some pretty cool products for the fashion-conscious among us iBook and PowerBook owners. Read More...

I love Ferraris. Doesnˆt everyone whose car consciousness transcends the appliance level? Ferraris are the ultimate exotic sports car. While there are a few worthy challengers like Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and perhaps the high-end Porsches and BMW Z-cars, nothing else really has the cachet of the Ferrari. Iˆve also been an avid fan of Formula One motor racing for more than 40 years, since about the time Phil Hill became the first American F-1 world champion, driving a Ferrari. Americaˆs only other World champion, Mario Andretti, also drove for Ferrari by times, but won his title in 1978 in a Lotus 79. One issue few people consider when purchasing a laptop, or indeed any type of computer, is how easy or otherwise it will be to service and repair.
This is one of my abiding BIG BEEFS, not just with iBooks and PowerBooks, or with Macs, or with computers in general, but indeed with most manufactured products, to wit: very seldom do you find a product designed with ease, simplicity, and economy of maintenance and repair as a priority. Instead, one often derives the impression that the designers and engineers went out of their way to make the thing hard to fix.
How much more pleasant and less tedious life would be if stuff were designed from the get-go for ease of disassembly and repair and/or module replacement. Instead, more often you get products that are a challenge just to get inside and work on, even for trained technicians equipped with appropriate tools and manuals. The Apple Store has several build-to-order (BTO) options available with new PowerBook G4s. With these options, you can configure the size of the hard drive, the type of optical drive, and the amount of included memory:
- 17" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 80GB hard drive (-$100), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 15" 1.67GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), Combo Drive (-$150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850), 128MB VRAM ($100)
- 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook: 100GB HD ($100), SuperDrive ($150), Up to 2GB RAM ($850)
- 12" 1.5GHz PowerBooks: 100GB 5400rpm HD ($150), Up to 1.256GB RAM ($425)
With these options, the wait at The Apple Store increases to 1-3 business days. Note that some of the options will actually reduce the price of the PowerBook. For instance, choosing an 80GB hard drive, as opposed to the standard 100GB hard drive, will lower the price of the 17" PowerBook by $100 to $2594. Choosing a Combo Drive with the 15" 1.67GHz model lowers the price by $150 to $2149.
