Noah's Notes: iTunes 7.0.1, Where's the Core 2 Duo MacBook?, iPhone Rumors (Again), Zune Launches
Friday, September 29 2006 @ 9:36 AM ET | Article Link
by Noah Kravitz
There was a lot of fanfare for the release of iTunes 7 and its updated interface, movie-stocked iTunes Store, and CoverFlow visual browsing system. There wasn't so much fanfare (at least not from Apple) for the recent iTunes 7.0.1 update, but with any luck this will the release worth downloading and installing. Problems abounded with the original version of the music player app, particularly for Windows users, with unhappy campers flooding the Apple support forums with tales of sped-up audio playback, cover art collections ruined by the new "Get Album Artwork" command, and CoverFlow view inducing system-crippling memory leaks.
I've been using iTunes 7 since the day it was released, and while it's been far from perfect (lots of missing album art, and a few pieces of artwork mistakenly chosen by the program) I haven't experienced any problems with actually listening to music. That being said, as soon as I heard about the .0.1 update I installed it. So far so good. Read More...
Return of the Apple 'Ultra-Portable' Line?
Friday, September 29 2006 @ 9:34 AM ET | Article Link
by Joe Leo
Yesterday, two "reputable" Mac-centric news/rumor sites reported that Apple will be bringing back their "ultra-portable" laptops sometime next year, specifically reserved for the MacBook line. The catch? These computers may turn out to be even smaller than their original "ultra-portable" 12-inch line of the now defunct iBooks and PowerBooks. "Wishes do come true." (To quote Apple's own tagline in their ad campaign for the premiere of the MacBook Pro). Clarification: according to the Dictionary application that comes with your Mac, the word defunct means "no longer existing or functioning." Let's just stress here right now that while these 12-inch babies no longer exist as a current product line, they are still functioning just fine thank you, and can still be found somewhere brand new, though in limited quantities, or even refurbished straight from Apple. Is The Age Of Disposable Laptops.... er...Notebooks.... Upon Us? - Plus 'Book Mystique Mailbag
Wednesday, September 27 2006 @ 9:20 AM ET | Article Link
by Charles W. Moore
“They just don’t build laptop computers like they used to,” some portable Mac aficionados lament, pining for the days of their old PowerBook 170 or 540c or even a fondly remembered clamshell iBook no doubt. Strictly speaking, Apple Computer no longer builds “laptop” computers at all by their own affirmation - the litigation-prophylactic officially endorsed term now being “notebook.”
The current crop of Apple MacBooks and MacBook Pros are, thin, lightweight, sleek, extremely fast, and more powerful and feature-packed than ever. A whole new dimension in the portable Mac experience, really. They are also more fragile than some Apple laptops of yesteryear, and run hotter than any 68k or production PowerPC laptop ever did (the prototype G5 PowerBooks were reportedly pretty sultry). It remains to be seen how long-lived they will be, but should that even be a priority issue, or should we regard laptop.... sorry, notebook.... computers the way we do automobiles - as high-ticket items that most of us replace on a fairly frequent basis? Power to the Pod!: Audioengine 5 Powered Speakers
Wednesday, September 27 2006 @ 9:17 AM ET | Article Link
by Noah Kravitz
Let's get one thing straight: You want true stereo sound, you need a stereo source and two speakers. You need to position those speakers far enough apart from each other so you get some separation between the left and right channels. Ideally you want to position the speakers so that they form an equilateral triangle between each other and the listener's head. But you at least want to get some separation between the left and right channels, or else you're not going to get stereo. There's nothing wrong with mono sound. High-quality mono systems like Tivoli's PAL can sound great - particularly out of doors where stereo imaging is all but lost to the elements, anyway. However, if you're into that whole stereo thing, you need speakers that can separate a fair amount from one another (how much depends on the size of that equilateral triangle). Apple's iPod HiFi doesn't really do stereo. Read More...

Typing by Backlight: Saitek Eclipse II Illumninated Keyboard
Monday, September 25 2006 @ 8:59 AM ET | Article Link
by Noah Kravitz
Saitek sent us their latest keyboard, the Eclipse II, for review. The Eclipse II is a 104-key USB keyboard featuring a multi-colored, dimmable backlight -- with the Eclipse II plugged into your setup, you can type in the dark and do it with your choice of a purple, red, or blue backlight illuminating the keys. It's pretty cool. Except that it's made for Windows and Saitek hasn't shipped or posted a Mac driver.
When I plugged the Eclipse II into my Mac, OS X recognized it as a new keyboard and guided me through a quick setup process. The Eclipse II was recognized as a standard US-layout keyboard and was immediately ready for use. I quickly noticed two things: 1. The Option and Command keys were reversed. 2. The dedicated media keys didn't exactly work: Six of the eight buttons did nothing at all, and the other two did the wrong things (Stop actually Muted, and Play/Pause acted as Volume Down).
