The Mac Web was awash (yet again) last week with rumor about the imminent release of a new MacBook Pro ¶ThinBook,¾ a thread of speculation that began shortly after Apple discontinued the erstwhile 12¾ PowerBook in May, 2006 with no replacement, unless you consider the 13¾ MacBook a satisfactory subnotebook substitute. The thing is that the MacBook is almost as big and heavy as the old full-size Titanium G4 PowerBook, and not that much smaller than a 15¾ MacBook Pro. For serious road warriors, these computers are much more bulky and weighty than what is ideal for extended lugging around. Iˆve thrown my oar into the speculation pool from time to time myself, and I have to say Iˆm somewhat surprised that no Intel Mac subnotebook has materialized yet, although Apple has had a tendency to sporadically address the subnotebook market with lengthy lapses interspersed. Notebook keyboards are OK - some better than others - but for anything more than short sessions at the computer you really need an external keyboard and pointing device, preferably used in conjunction with a laptop stand that can get the screen up into comfortable elevation. Laptop ergonomics are pretty horrible, and habitual use in laptop mode is likely to result in rounded shoulders and a stiff neck. Although I prefer wired input devices at my office workstation, for mobile computing, the most convenient solutions will be wireless devices. Apple offers both modes in its new aluminum keyboards, but one shortcoming of the wireless version is that it, like notebook keyboards, has no separate numerical keypad, but rather depends upon a Numlock-mediated embedded pad. So, huh, the new iPods are here. And the iPhone is suddenly one-third cheaper than it was 24 hours ago. And I'm not sure I get it. Video-capable nanos and "iPod Classics" with even more storage make sense. Upgrade, upgrade, and keep the prices constant if you can. I'm not sure about that "fatty" nano form factor, nor am I so sure about that new UI on the nano and Classic (I thought simple-meets-elegant was Apple's hallmark), but I can't say a word until I've played with the things myself. On the one hand, running an 25 or 50-foot headphone extension cable from one end of the room to the other has proven the most cost-effective and best sounding solution I've found to the oh so modern problem of wanting to play music from my iPod through a home stereo without getting my lazy butt up off the couch to change songs. Apple released their 2007 iPod lineup today with all new models. In brief:

1) The iPod shuffle gets new colors. Black, Silver, Red, and pastel Blue & Green. Same 1GB and same $79 price. The new shuffle is available today at The Apple Store.

2) The iPod nano is all new with a metal skin and 2" display. It's thinner than the previous model but 'fatter' to accomodate the new 320 x 240 pixel display. The nano also sports a new splitscreen user interface. A Silver 4GB model is offered for $149, while an 8GB model, available in various colors, sells for $199. The new iPod nano is available today at The Apple Store.

3) The 2006 video iPod has been renamed the iPod classic. It's available with a silver or black metal skin in either 80GB ($249) or 160GB ($349) varieties. It also sports the new user interface. The iPod classic is available today at The Apple Store.

4) Apple released the new iPod touch, which is essentially an iPhone minus the phone. It's a bit thinner than the iPhone (8mm thick), but otherwise comes with all the iPhone features - same case design, same display, WiFi with Safari, and all the other iPhone goodies. There will be two models; an 8GB touch for $299, and a 16GB model for $399. These models will no doubt be the hot holiday sellers. Apple expects the new iPod touch to ship later in September.

5) Finally, the 4GB iPhone has been dropped, while the 8GB iPhone now sells for $399 - a $200 price drop. This model is available today at The Apple Store.

Trackpads are not bad pointing devices, at least if theyˆre well-engineered. The best Iˆve used is actually the freestanding Cirque Easy Cat touchpad, whose performance is better than any built-in trackpad Iˆve encountered yet in a Mac notebook. The trackpad in my old WallStreet PowerBook is the next-best, but handicapped by a maddeningly stiff trackpad button. The pad in my Pismos is pretty good too.
