17-inch Unibody MacBook Pro With Fixed Battery To Debut At Macworld?

Only a couple of hours to wait now for the macworld keynote, but
Appleinsider's Kasper Jade reports that Apple could as early as today introduce a new unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro with a fixed internal battery, saying that sources familiar with the matter say both products are due to begin shipping this month but not necessarily in time for a Macworld introduction.

That there will be a unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro this year is a given, and it's probably not far off, but the most intriguing element of this rumor is the part about the new big notebook's battery being be fixed in place and not conveniently removable by users, similar to the MacBook Air's. Seems an odd move, especially after the MacBook Air's non-removable battery has been one of its most universally disparaged features.

However, 9To5Mac's Seth Weintraub thinks a possible answer to that puzzle might be that Apple will be pioneering Silver-Zinc battery usage with the new king-of-the-hill MacBook Pro, observing that "They may have new technology that can take more charges, or they may offer a service replacement similar to the replacement of a motherboard or hard drive. Maybe swapping out the battery will be as easy as swapping out RAM."

ITWire's Stephen Withers comments that a fixed battery would save weight and allow a thinner chassis, and the weight saving could be applied to fitting a higher capacity battery (perhaps using a technology other than lithium ion).

Seth Weintraub also wonders if Apple will go with glossy-only displays on the new 17-incher, which has been highly controversial on the 15" model, and suggests that the holdover 13-inch Plastic MacBook is likely to be discontinued with a corresponding price cut for the base unibody MacBook. That latter would certainly get my attention.

MacBook Pro (Aluminum and Black) 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 15.4" Memory Upgrade Information

RAMSeeker has posted an informative blog entry noting that to get the most out of the MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo laptop computer you need to upgrade the memory. Memory is cheap and the best and easiest upgrade you can do...

The MacBook Pro 2.4 comes standard with 2 x 1GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-8500). You can, and should for maximum performance upgrade the memory to 4GB, which is the maximum memory that this notebook can take. There are 2 memory slots in this notebook. so you'll have to replace the included memory if you want to upgrade.

MSI Announces MSI X-Slim Series X320 Super-Slim 1.3 kg 13.4¾ Notebook

MSI (Micro-Star International)'s new X-Slim Series X320 subnotebook bays frank homage to the MacBook Air, and outdoes it in some aspects, notably I/O port connectivity and presumably price by a substantial margin. The MSI X320 is equipped with an Intel CPU and a 13.4¾ display with an optimized 16:9 screen, and weighs in at about 1.3 kg (2.9 pounds or a tenth of a pound less than the Air).

Not only light, the X320 is also very thin with an overall thickness as little as 1.98 cm, with the thinnest point being only 6 mm. In addition to its lightness and thinness, the X320 also features up to 10 hours battery life.

Once again debunking Apple's implication that there is no room for a decent array of I/O ports on a machine this small, the X320 is equipped with built-in Ethernet, three USB ports, an SD card reader and VGA out.

Unlike the MacBook Air, the MSI X320 is available with several color options: Champagne Gold, Pearl White or Jet Black.

A U.S. launch date hasn't yet been announced.
