Intel Reveals Notebook Product Roadmap For 2009 - 2010
DigiTimes' Monica Chen and Joseph Tsai report that Intel recently outlined its plans for traditional notebook, CULV-based ultra-thin notebook and netbook product lines for its partners, according to sources at notebook makers.
Chen and Tsai note that Intel's next-generation Calpella notebook platform will launch as scheduled in the third quarter 2009 and targeting models in the 14.0-, 15.6-, 17.1- and 18.4-inch segments at retail prices of above US$1,200 initially for high-end market. Meanwhile, Intel will also reduce the price of the Montevina platform to clear out inventory.
The report says that notebook makers including Apple subcontractor Quanta Computer are ram ping up to mass produce Calpella-based notebooks in the third quarter with more models to launch in Q1 2010, and that in the 12- to 13-inch segment, Intel will be pushing CULV-based ultra-thin notebooks using Montevina CPUs as the major force targeting the US$699-1,100 price range that takes in the low end Apple MacBooks, as well as some traditional notebooks that offer a good performance/price ratio.
Intel is reportedly also mulling phase-out of the Atom N280 and GN40 chipset combination for netbooks, leavingt the more powerful Atom N270 and 945GSE chipset as the netbook mainstays until fall, to then be replaced by the next-generation Atom CPU (Pineview) and (Tiger Point) chipset, plus the chipmaker will offer a standard 8.9-inch netbook for white-box vendors featuring the Atom N270 CPU, 945GSE chipset, 512MB memory, and 8GB or 16GB flash-based storage.
