PowerBook 540

by Steve Hildreth

The 540 is the grayscale equivalent of the 540c. The screen was the first to display 64 grays instead of the standard 16 grays. The 540 also shipped with a 240 MB hard drive as opposed to the 540c's 320 MB. Otherwise the models are identical. Users generally paid between $800-1000 for the upgrade from grayscale to color and gained only 0.2 pounds. The active-matrix screen is bright & sharp and nice for working with text documents, and it consumes less juice from the batteries. However, unless price is a strong consideration, many people will probably opt for the color screen when looking for a 540 on the used market.
